ICT projects at UAICCase study: the FII-NLP Group Dan Cristea Department of Computer Science AlexandruIoanCuza University of Iasi dcristea@info.uaic.ro
Research in “A.I.Cuza” • The multidisciplinary research departments • The research departments at the faculty levels • The Research Office at the Rector • specialized in FP (and other types of) projects • what these gentlemen have presented today is already common knowledge in this office • LEAR (Legal Entity Appointed Representative) • an administrative structure well established, PIC, etc. • entitled to do coordination, international audit, financial issues covered • advertise internal and international calls, deadlines
The NLP Group at FII • FP5: • Balkanet – one of the first projects in the University: a network of aligned lexical thesauri for Balkan languages • FP6: • LT4eL: Language Technology for eLearning • INTAS (coordinator): • RoLTech. Platform for Romanian Language Technology: Resources, Tools and Interfaces • FP7 (running): • CLARIN: Common Language Resources and Technology Infrastructure • ALEAR: Artificial Language Evolution in Autonomous Robots
Working in a group • People • permanent didactic staff • permanent researchers in faculty departments • PhD students, sometimes – master • administrative staff • Each PhD student is assigned to one project • The project the student is assigned to is on the line of her thesis • open PhD positions immediately after the start of the project • accept/propose projects in which your team is expert
The Round-Robin supervision • Each student is visited at least once a week • but: leave them some degrees of freedom • do not exploit them • They should have the feeling of belonging to the Group • enrol in competitions to play under the colours of the University • they go to main conferences and project meetings (NLP-FII: between 2 and 4 international participations each) • make them feel good together • Their work is appreciated • Give them formative responsibilities
The permanent renew • Nothing is stable or for ever • Try to avoid conflicts: • a good team could be easily destabilised by a bizarre personality • Replace the ones who leave • be happy if they ask you for recommendations; they will spread in the world good words about their school of origin • Get new people aboard by: • courses & term projects • final grade projects/papers • master programmes in the domain • summer schools
The EUROLAN series of summer schools in Natural Language Processing
