Yaws Yaws is a bacterium disease found mainly in tropical and poor places in Africa and Asia. When someone has Yaws one bump forms on their body and if it goes untreated then more and more bumps start to appear.
Attack and Spread • Yaws infects people with open wounds from little cuts and scrapes to serious injuries. • It spreads from person to person.
Victims • Yaws infects mostly young children. 75% of victims are under 15. • If Yaws isn’t treated it can cause tissue destruction, bone and joint problems, and chronic disabilities. • In some communities, yaws has affected over three-fourths of the population under twenty years old.
Treatment • Benzathine penicillin is the main treatment for yaws. • Penicillin cures yaws by interfering with the bacteria’s ability to synthesize the cell walls.
