STATEMENT I am the superintendent of the P. O. S. Mine #1. You are located at the fresh air base of the #2 Section. The #2 Section was developing 3 entries off of the main entries and has been operating with an eight person crew. A scoop battery storage area is located between the fresh air base and the second cross cut in the #1 entry. At 10:00 a.m. this morning the mine communication center received a call from an outby mechanic which went to the unit with his helper to assist with a downed scoop in the #1 entry. The mechanic said the unit was filling with smoke, and then all communications were lost. Several attempts have been made to contact the #2 Section to no avail. This section has experienced bad roof conditions and high concentrations of methane gas. The power will remain energized in the fresh air base, however, all power going inby the fresh air base has been de-energized and locked out, but will be available when you need it. The mine is ventilated with a blowing fan that is in operation and cannot be reversed, shut off, or stalled out. All proper authorities have been notified, a command center has been established on the surface, and back-up mine rescue teams are standing by if needed. There are supplies outby if your team needs them. The mine maps are up to date. This is all the information we have available at this time.
