  1. SENDING & RECEIVING SMS VIAGSM TECHNOLOGY By - Vivek Dhiman (06403) Nipun Mahajan (06413) Ketav Sharma (06448) MENTORS : Dr. (Mrs.) Rajeevan Chandel Mrs. Meenakshi Sood

  2. ABSTRACT • The project involves the design of a embedded system that can be used to send & receive SMS through GSM technology. Usage of this technology accomplishes communication between the embedded system and mobile phone. The vital aspect involves the usage of a GSM modem by means of AT (Attention) commands.

  3. MOTIVATION & OBJECTIVE • To utilize our skills towards design and development of applications related to GSM technology • GSM is the latest technique used for communication between the mobile and the embedded devices. • The objective of the project is to send and receive SMS by means of a GSM Modem

  4. WHY GSM TECHNOLOGY ? • Global System for Mobile • Popular standard for mobile phones • 2G mobile phone system • Operation bands - 900 MHz or 1800 MHz • Key feature – Subscriber Identity Module (SIM)

  5. SMS SENDING KEYPAD ANTENNA GS M MODEM MICRO CONTROLLER GSM MODEM

  6. SMS RECEIVING ANTENNA GSM MODEM LCD DISPLAY MICRO CONTROLLER

  7. COMPONENTS USED • Microcontroller - ATMEGA 16L • Crystal Oscillator - 8 MHz • RS 232 - Serial Communication • GSM Modem - Communication • LCD - Display SOFTWARES USED Kiel C & AVR Studio 4

  8. RS 232 • A "Space" (logic 0) between +3 and +25 Volts. • A "Mark" (Logic 1) between -3 and -25 Volts. • Open circuit voltage – less then 25v

  9. MICROCONTROLLER • ATMEGA 16L • 16K Bytes of In-System Self programmable Flash program memory • 512 Bytes EEPROM • 1K Byte Internal SRAM • 32 Programmable I/O Lines

  10. GSM MODEM • FEATURES • Tri band GSM Modem • Built in TCP/IP Protocol • AT Command Based • Designed for GPRS, SMS ,Voice Applications.

  11. INTERFACES OF GSM MODEM • RS-232 with D type 9 pin connector • GSM/GPRS antenna • Power supply • AC / DC power adapter • Input ac voltage – 230v • Output dc voltage – 12v • Flag opening type SIM holder

  12. FUTURE ENHANCEMENT • Addition of different designs in text message. • Sending of 5-10 messages at a particular time.
