Hodgkin’s disease, now known as Hodgkin’s lymphoma, is cancer of the lymphatic system. • In this cancer the cells in the lymphatic system grow abnormally spreading outside the lymph system, making it harder for the body to fight off infections. • It was named after Thomas Hodgkin, a graduate of the University of Edinburgh Medical School, who was the first to describe abnormities in the lymphatic system What is it?
Classical Hodgkin's lymphoma- The more common type of the disease, people with this from of the cancer have abnormally large Reed-Sternberg cells in their lymph nodes. • Lymphocyte-predominant Hodgkin's lymphoma- The rarer type of the cancer that involve abnormally large cells called popcorn cells due to their appearance. Age- Hodgkin’s lymphoma is commonly diagnosed between the ages 15-35 or 55 and older • Family History- Anyone who has siblings with this disease is at a higher risk • Sex- Males are slightly more likely to get this disease • Epstein-Barr virus- People who had this virus are more likely to get this disease • Weakened Immune System people, who have a weakened immune system from HIV or having an organ transplant, are more likely to get this disease Risk Factors
It is not clear what causes Hodgkin’s lymphoma • Most doctors think it is caused when a B cell, infection fighting cell, develops a mutation in its DNA. • This mutation produces larger B cells that crowd other healthy cells in the lymph system Causes
Painless swelling of lymph nodes in your neck, armpits or groin • Persistent fatigue • Fever and chills • Night Sweats • Loss of appetite • Itching • Trouble breathing Symptoms
Treating of Hodgkin’s lymphoma depend on your type and the stage of the disease. Some forms of treatment are: • Chemotherapy- a drug treatment that uses chemicals to kill lymphoma cells • Radiation- high energy beams are used to kill the cancer cells, in Hodgkin’s lymphoma the beams are aimed at the lymph nodes. • Stem cell transplant- a treatment that replaces diseased bone marrow, with healthy stem cells to grow new bone marrow Treatment
