ICE BREAKER • Tell us your name and your scariest Freshman experience
What is a Peer Mentor? • A liaison between the students in the learning community and the faculty and coordinators of the learning community. • Provide support, guidance, and connection for Mentees.
What is a Learning Community? • “Community of Learners” • Students study, socialize, and problem solve together.
What makes TIP’s Learning Community Unique? • Centered around providing resources and supports to students with a history of foster care • All students have the opportunity to engage in community outreach and leadership opportunities. • Public Speaking • Event Planning • Community Service
Why were you chosen to be a Peer Mentor? • TIP Staff have acknowledged that you have excelled in one or more ways during your time at Wayne State University. • We need leaders like YOU to help us better serve students with a foster care background.
What do you get out of being a Peer Mentor? • Leadership Experience • Resume booster • $150! (per semester)
ACTIVITY • Discussion Questions • How do you think the TIP LC could impact WSU? • How do you think the TIP LC could impact the WSU students? • What would you like the TIP LC to do? i.e. community service projects together • When are good times to get the LC together? • Where should we get the LC together?
Responsibilities of a Peer Mentor • Each of you will mentor 1 or more mentees • Establish relationship with mentee(s) • Keep a positive attitude, stay self motivated, be responsible • Act as a role model in terms of behavior in the classroom, socially and academically • Meet with Mentee face to face monthly • Connect with Mentee weekly via calling, text, social media etc. • Attend Monthly Mentor Activities • Report to the Lead Peer Mentor Mentorship activities i.e. Helped my mentee with his homework Tuesday night via blackboard threads
How to Interact with your Mentee • Put your phone and computer away. Give them your full attention. • Be patient • Listen • Be Understanding • Be Respectful • One step at a time • Focus on Strengths
Interaction Activity • Find a Partner • What are some ways you can interact and engage with your Mentee? • Scenarios Include: • Mentee not contacting you back • Mentee is shy • Mentee wants to interact with you ALL the time! • Mentee invites you to a Party. Do you go?
Boundaries with your Mentee • Physical and intimate relationships with your mentee are not allowed • Report concerning conversations. I.e. Mentee is being abused by their significant other. • Self Disclosure: Only disclose the amount of information about yourself you are comfortable with. Leave some mystery- do not share everything about yourself with your mentee. • Confidentiality: Keep information shared between you and your mentee private. Some information will be shared in your reports. Do not talk about your mentees situation with your friends, family, or in class.
