  1. A Spatial Data Catalog based Initiative to launch the Spain SDI M.A. Bernabé1, M.Gould2, C. Granell2, P.R.Muro-Medrano3, J.Nogueras3, F.J.Zarazaga3 Politechnic University of Madrid University Jaume I, Castellón University of Zaragoza GSDI-6 Budapest

  2. Tecnologías para Infraestructuras de Datos Espaciales • Consortium of researchers @ 3 universities • Involved in 4 SDI projects • 2 regional, 1 national + INSPIRE • Active OpenGIS members • Technologists, interested in open SDI, not single-vendor solutions GSDI-6 Budapest

  3. Reverse engineering • The process of analysing an existing system to identify its components and their interrelationships and create representations of the system in another form or at a higher level of abstraction. (www.dictionary.com) GSDI-6 Budapest

  4. Reverse engineering (2) • Respectable name for copying other peoples’ work. • For learning from others’ mistakes. • Where to look: Norwegian pilot, NRW, FGDC, OS (DNF), ESMI, OGC testbeds, INSPIRE... GSDI-6 Budapest

  5. Our objective • Contribute to the successful development of SDIs • Regional SDIs • National SDIs • European/Global SDIs Also: students learn by doing and extending GSDI-6 Budapest

  6. Our methodology • Create working prototypes of SDI components • Demonstrate to politicians • Using their own data • Hope they ask for more • Hope they are inspired to create a reference model, for SDI sustainability GSDI-6 Budapest

  7. Cart before the horse? • SDIs are driven by politics • Based on agreements, standards, cooperation, sharing, politics of public sector data access • Based on a conceptual architecture or model • Technology is merely a facilitator… • Proper development should not start with technology, rather with needs-based model GSDI-6 Budapest

  8. Reality • Politicians need help to decide how to begin • Huge investments, and savings, at stake • Many cannot imagine what SDI look like • In such a case it is impossible to expect a reference model be proposed • Our experience shows that technology demonstrations can provide the political spark GSDI-6 Budapest

  9. Confusion • Many SDI options available • Standards (at times competing) • Reference data • Access: Metadata and Catalogs • User Services • Many SDIs already partially implemented • How to turn back, restart, migrate? GSDI-6 Budapest

  10. SDI technology: complicated GSDI-6 Budapest

  11. SDI technology: simplified GSDI-6 Budapest Source: NASA, 2001

  12. Access: Metadata • FGDC, CEN, Dublin Core, ISO... • Competing formats no longer an issue • ISO 19115 (DIS) is available, if you try • National liaisons (NMAs); OGC liaison • Vendors are implementing it; why aren’t you? • National/regional profiles of 19115 encouraged! • Dublin Core easily added GSDI-6 Budapest

  18. Access: Catalogs • Older SDIs utilised z39.50-based digital library technology (FGDC Isite, etc.) • More recently, OGC Catalog Service 1.0 • Several implementations (incl z39.50), 1 conformant • A draft 1.1 document is pending, to be completed soon • Rumours of advanced, web services-based “stateless catalog” specification in the works • This will happen, but DO NOT wait for them • SDIs must implement OGC Catalog Spec 1.0 now. “The Cookbook authors recommend that organisations publish their metadata using OpenGIS Consortium Catalog Services Specification.” GSDI Cookbook, 2000 GSDI-6 Budapest

  22. Commercial products coming... GSDI-6 Budapest

  23. User services • Was previously termed “web mapping” • But services are now much more diverse • Feature service • Coverage service • Terrain Server • Sensor collection service • Just a few examples emerging from OWS-1 GSDI-6 Budapest

  25. The Future • Huge constellation of Web Services, creating the (geo)Semantic Web • Much to do in semantic interoperability: web services need to communicate seamlessly to create service chains • But let’s not get ahead of ourselves • First we need to provide users with basic access to Geographic Reference Data • Standards, technologies and experiences exist • INSPIRE provides the background political push GSDI-6 Budapest
