KHIARDS • Established in 1922 originally as a retailer of Jewellery and furniture at the port city of Trincomalee • Currently in its third generation of a wholly family owned and run business. • Business broadly divided into 2 sectors • Wholesale and retail sale of fine gemstones • Manufacture and retail of unique high value jewellery sold in our 5 retail outlets in Sri Lanka and the Maldives.

  2. The Ceylon sapphire • Sri Lanka is world renowned especially for its sapphires • Origin plays a role in demand for quality gemstones • Sapphires occur in many colours : • Blue sapphires • Padparadsha (King of sapphire) • Ruby • Yellow • Pink

The Ceylon sapphire • In addition to the variety of colours these are finished in a variety of faceted cuts or cabochon and also occur in the form of star sapphires • More recently the Ceylon sapphire was showcased at the British Royal Wedding where a Sri Lankan blue sapphire made the centrepiece of the Duchess of Cambridge’s wedding ring.

  4. The Ceylon sapphire • Sri Lanka has some of the most experienced gem cutters and finishers in the world • Khiards has its own ‘in house’ gem cutting facility and use prevailing best local expertise in the finishing of fine gemstones

The Ceylon sapphire • Cut and polished stones are categorised as • Natural/unheated • Thermal treatment/heated • Treated stones • As company policy, Khiards do not deal in artificially colour infused or treated stones and internationally recognised gemmological certification is provided on request for each gemstone sold. • The most common international Certificates are from Gubelin,GRS,GIA and from local labs such as the Gemmological institute of Colombo

  6. The Ceylon sapphire • Although sapphires come in many commercial grades, High quality natural and sometimes heat treated Ceylon sapphires in rare colours and cleanliness are much sort after by individual end user customers

  7. Other Gemstones of Sri Lanka • Sri Lanka is also renowned source of: • Alexandrite : changes colour from green to red when exposed to light based on its chromate ion arrangement • Beryls : Also seen as ‘cat’s eyes’ • Spinels • Garnets • Topaz

Sri Lankan Gem Expertise • As a predominantly gem mining country, our local expertise enables us to identify the best quality semiprecious stones globally in their rough form. • These are then cut and polished in Sri Lanka by our gem cutters and then re-exported on the open market. • Gemstones in this category include Spinels and Garnets (esp. tsavorite)

  9. International exposure • As a member of The International Coloured Gemstone Association (ICA) and The Sri Lankan Gem and Jewellery Authority, Khiards is represented in trade fairs globally.

International exposure • These Include: • Tuscon Fair – Tuscon,Arizona-January • Baselworld –Basel,Switzerland- April • Kunming Import and Export Fair- China- June • Hong Kong Jewellery and Gem Fair –HK- September • China International Gold,Jewellery and Gem Fair- Shanghai- November • In Addition to participation in trade fairs, we export cut and finished gemstones to America, Great Britain, Germany,France, Japan, China and Thailand to name a few
