States of Consciousness Stages of Sleep & Sleep Disorders
Biological Rhythms & Sleep • Circadian rhythm: internal bio clock; regular bodily rhythms (temp, wakefulness) that occur on a 24 hour cycle • Age & experience can alter it • “owls” to morning-loving “larks”
Sleep Stages-every 90 min., cycle through 5 stages -EEG measures sleep act.
Stage 4 REM • Deepest sleep • Delta waves • Sleep walking • Growing (in kids) • Sleep talking • Wetting the bed • Night terrors • Rapid eye movement • Dreams • Muscles relaxed • Essentially paralyzed • Genital arousal (despite whether or not dreams are of sexual content) • Erection • Vaginal lubrication • Paradoxical sleep: body internally aroused; externally calm 1 – 2 – 3 – 4- 3- 2- REM
