  14. Procedure for the Review of Inspections Schools and Teachers under Section 13 (9) of the Education Act 1998. This is currently being reviewed in consultation with the education partners

  16. Looking at our Schools Statesn that: Ireland, along with other European countries is adopting a model of quality assurance that emphaises school development planning through internal school review and self evalaution, with support of external evaluation carried out by the Inspectorate

Looking at our School- Themes for Self -evaluation • An Appropriate Guidance Plan as part of the Whole School Plan • Whole School Support for Guidance • Balance and Effective Provision of Guidance throughout the school • Full and Appropriate Use of Available Resources • Access to Appropriate Professional Development

  18. School Guidance Plan • The BOM is responsible for the Whole School Plan • THE Guidance Counsellor should be central to the drafting of the school guidance plan • Provision for an annual review of the plan should be built into the planning process

  19. School Guidance Plan • The plan should be based on an evaluation of students’ needs • It should include guidance and counselling provision for all students and all school programmes • It should prioritise needs in accordance with available resources

Elements of School Guidance Plan • Overall aims, objectives and targets • Consultation process and analysis of students’ needs • Planning of school resources to provide optimum guidance and counselling support for all year groups and programmes • Planning a School Guidance Programme (NCGE, 2004). This is designed to assist schoolswith school guidance planning

Elements of a Plan - continued • Specific or special school guidance / counselling initiatives (GEI, SCP), outside programmes/ agencies, business and the local community • Planning of group and one-to-one student contact • Networking and liaison • ICT • Monitoring and Evaluation • Monitoring Progression Routes of students

  22. Guidance Inspection in Schools The Process

  23. Process: In advance of the Inspection of Guidance • Schools selected within DES • Period of notice – minimum 2 weeks • Contact made with schools and date for inspection agreed • Documentation required in advance • Guidance Counsellor (s) Timetable (s) • Other relevant documents

Process: The Day/s of the Inspection • One inspector and one day, typically • Meetings with the School Principal • Discussion with Guidance Counsellor (s) on Guidance plan & programme • Visits to classes • Interviews with other staff • Examination of documentation and records • View Facilities • Provide Feedback on Findings and Recommendations

  25. Format of the Report • School and inspection details and data • Subject provision and whole-school support • Planning and preparation • Learning and teaching • Assessment and achievement • Findings • Recommendations

  26. What happens to the report? Issuing of Subject Inspection Reports • The completed SI report will be issued to schools • to the Principal • BOM • (if applicable the CEO of the VEC)

  27. Subject inspection reports • All reports on inspection/ evaluation started after 6th February (and responses to the reports) will be published on the DES website

  28. Response procedures • BOMs and teachers can choose the following: • Accept the report without comment • Respond formally • Request a formal review of the inspection • Guidelines on Evaluation are available on the DES website www.education.ie
