HST Servicing Mission Cancellation J. R. Walsh 16 Jan. NASA Administrator O’Keefe cancels future HST servicing missions. Widespread reaction 21 Jan. Senator Mikulski calls for reconsideration and independent panel to review safety for Hubble servicing 22 Jan. AAS press release supports call for Congressional review of SM cancellation 29 Jan. In response to Sen. Mikulski, O’Keefe asks Admiral Gehman (CAIB, chair) opinion on safety issue for Hubble servicing. Response “in a few weeks” NASA Astronomy & Physics Division (Head Anne Kinney) regret loss but will work to extend HST useful life. SM4 instruments COS and WFC3 offered for use in MIDEX missions
HST SM Cancellation - 2 06 Feb. RAS also expresses concern at loss of HST facilities. ESA & NASA should maintain scientific and technical momentum into JWST 07 Feb. American Physical Society calls for independent assessment of cancellation 07 Feb. Anonymous NASA engineer(s) question concern over safety aspects of Hubble SM in press Strong reaction from NASA. Repudiate “superificial” analysis. Ed Wyler (Head, NASA Space Science) regrets decision but defends O’Keefe NASA budget and plans still to be approved by Congress
HST Mission Lifetime Considerations Gyros are highest short term mission risk items Four gyros operational – one with high bias. Three required for full pointing + tracking Two gyro mode in work, on-orbit tests late in 2004 Two gyro – PSF elongated along axis perp. to two gyros. Jitter to ~25mas (current <5mas) Signal-to-noise reduced; jitter large fraction pixel size for ACS HRC+SBC, NIC1+2; STIS SBC Other disadvantages: poorer sky coverage; no moving target capability
Hubble UDF: 400 orbits + NICMOS treasury 400 orbits Director’s Discretionary in GOODS CDFS field Primary: ACS WFC Parallel: ACS HRC auto-parallel, WFPC2, NIC3, STIS NICMOS Treasury 3x3 NIC3 Fields (144 orbits) Parallel: ACSWFC, HRC auto-parallel Public release: 09 March 2004 From STScI, ST-ECF, CADC UDF
