Surface Currents • Generally flow in the upper 1000 meters of the ocean • Are driven by wind and the coriolis effect • Can affect weather all over the globe
Warm currents flow away from the equator Cold currents flow toward the equator
Surfce Currents • The flow of the currents is very similar to how winds blow all over the world. Winds blow form high pressure to low pressure. • Surface currents move from an area of high density (cold) to an area of less density (warm).
Density Currents • These are driven by gravity and density differences • The densest waters come from polar regions • This is due to freezing Global Conveyor Belt
