Pronouns • What pronouns would be in a first person story? • “I, me, my, our” etc. • What pronouns would be in a third person story? • “He, she, it, they” etc. • Look out!!!! Never use the pronouns that are in dialogue (quotations) • Why could you not use dialogue to indicate point of view?
The pronouns tell you the difference between 1st and 3rd, but how do you tell the difference between 3rd limited and 3rd omniscient? • 3rd person limited- the narrator stays with one character’s thoughts and gives an external overview of other characters • 3rd person omniscient- an “all knowing” narrator gives the reader information about many characters that one person could not know (thoughts and feelings)
Let’s Practice!!!! • Read the text on the next page • Decide what point of view this is told from and why • Make sure to look for pronouns and the thoughts and feelings of the characters • Here we go……..
Once upon a time in Spain there was a little bull and his name was Ferdinand. All the other little bulls he lived with would run and jump and butt their heads together, but not Ferdinand. He liked to sit just quietly and smell the flowers. He had a favorite spot out in the pasture under a cork tree. It was his favorite tree and he would sit in its shade all day and smell the flowers. Sometimes his mother, who was a cow, would worry about him. She was afraid he would be lonesome all by himself. "Why don't you run and play with the other little bulls and skip and butt your head?" she would say. But Ferdinand would shake his head. "I like it better here where I can sit just quietly and smell the flowers." His mother saw that he was not lonesome, and because she was an understanding mother, even though she was a cow, she let him just sit there and be happy.

Dialect • What is dialect? • The manner or style of expressing oneself with language • How is it used within literature? • The speech of a character can give the reader a clue to the setting of a story or the background of the character • Example: If a character uses the word “y’all”, where would you assume the story takes place?
More uses for dialect….. • Dialect is not only used to give you a clue about the setting, but also background information about a character… • Example- In “My Fair Lady”, Eliza speaks a form of dialect from London called cockney. What did you think? • What words does she pronounce differently from what you are used to? • Lovely- “Loverly” • Oh- “Aow” • It- “Eat” • Hands- “ ‘Ands” • Head- “ ’Ead” • He- “ ‘e” • Notice how the “H” is not pronounced
What are the different types of speech? • Formal • This is used for writing papers or speaking to someone you are trying to impress (like in a job interview) • Informal/ Conversational • This is used while speaking amongst friends or writing a friendly letter • Texting lingos “lol” ,“btw” ,“otw” • Remember: Never use informal speech when you write an essay or answer questions on a test
Character Evaluation • In order to evaluate a character you must look at 5 major aspects: • Physical Appearance • Personality Traits • Challenges/ Problems They Face • Role Within the Story • Accomplishments
Character Traits • A character’s traits are their personality traits • You learn these by paying attention to their actions and words • Example- If someone stops to help another person who has fallen, what would you say their personality trait is? • Kind, Compassionate, Caring???
Values • Every author/ narrator has a certain set of values • The theme usually reflects those values • How does the reader learn what the values are? • If an author writes a story about someone working and paying their way through college, they may value education
Testing Guidelines • Remember to read all instructions and questions FIRST • Read the stories carefully • Answer each question carefully • Follow all instructions!!!!!
