  5. U.S. population suffering from Chart is in millions *Many that suffer from Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) also exhibit symptoms of depression, anxiety and insomnia

  6. Need for Treatment • There is a very close relationship between substance abuse and depression* • Substance abuse and depression frequently co-occur in adolescents** * abcnews.go.com/Health/DepressionScreening/story?id=4355978 ** www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/pii/S0749379706002431

  7. Chart is in millions U.S. population affected by substance abuse

  8. Potential Solutions • Nexalin Treatments (safe & effective) • Pharmaceutical Solutions (warning labels) • Electroshock Therapy (potential loss of memory… scary) • Medical Devices (warning labels) • Live with the suffering

  9. Why Nexalin • Nexalin is Effective • Nexalin is Safe • Nexalin is Long lasting 10 to 15 restful Nexalin Treatments in a comfortable chair offers long lasting and effective benefits. Nexalin has been proven to be as safe as placebos.

  10. Nexalin Treatment Programs • 1 per day for 10 to 15 days • 2 per day for 5 days (in study stage) • 3 per day for 5 days (in study stage) • 10 treatments over 3 days (3… 4… 3) (in study stage) • 5 per day for 3 days (in study stage) • Recent treatments have shown multiple treatments in a single day offer the same immediate results as single daily treatments

  11. Present Pharmaceutical Treatments are Problematic • Benzodiazepines, often prescribed for anxiety account for 32% of drug related visits to the emergency rooms* • Self-medication with alcohol ranged from 7.9% to 35.6% in those with anxiety*** • In a nationally representative survey, almost one-quarter of individuals with mood disorders (24.1%) used alcohol or drugs to relieve symptoms**** U.S. DEPARTMENT OF HEALTH AND HUMAN SERVICES (2004). "Drug Abuse Warning Network, 2004 *** www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/17102705 **** www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/19004504

  12. Drugs for Anxiety and Depression • Selective Serotonin Reuptake Inhibitors (SSRIs) • Serotonin & Norepinephrine Reuptake Inhibitors (SNRIs) • Monoamine Oxidase Inhibitors (MAOIs) • Narcotics • Benzodiazepines • All have issues with tolerance, dependence and withdrawal • Some are addictive • Some have withdrawal problems

  13. Pharmaceutical Side Effects • Many drugs warn of potential side effects that range from mild to severe to potentially fatal • It is reported that prescription drug abuse is more deadly than heroin and cocaine combined • About 6.1 million people abuse prescription pills • Overdose deaths have at least doubled during the past decade www.csmonitor.com/USA/Society/2013/1007/Prescription-drug-abuse-now-more-deadly-than-heroin-cocaine-combined

  14. Medical Device Options • Electro Convulsive Therapy (ECT) • Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation (TMS) • Deep Brain Stimulation (DBS) • Vagus Nerve Stimulation (VNS)

  15. Electroconvulsive Therapy (ECT) • ECT is a procedure in which electric currents are passed through the brain, intentionally triggering a brief seizure. Requires general anesthesia. • Potential side effects include confusion, memory loss, nausea, vomiting, headache, jaw pain, muscle ache or muscle spasm. www.mayoclinic.com/health/electroconvulsive-therapy/MY00129

  16. (ECT) Additional Side Effects • Medical complications such as heart rate and blood pressure increase may also occur, which may lead to serious heart problems.* • The treatment costs $1,000 to $2,500 per session, and typically involves from 6 to 12 sessions. Total cost can range from $6,000 to $30,000.** * www.mayoclinic.com/health/electroconvulsive-therapy/MY00129 ** www.nytimes.com/2011/01/24/business/24shock.html?pagewanted=all&_r=0

  17. Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation (TMS) • TMS uses magnetic fields to stimulate nerve cells in the brain.* • A large electromagnetic coil is placed against the scalp near the forehead.* Members of the FDA panel expressed doubts that the machine helps depressed patients or provides any advantage over placebo treatment.** * www.mayoclinic.com/health/transcranial-magnetic-stimulation/MY00185 ** www.webmd.com/depression/news/20070129/device-for-depression-criticized

  18. (TMS) Additional Side Effects • Common side effects can include headache, scalp discomfort, tingling, spasms or twitching of facial muscles, lightheadedness* • Uncommon side effects include seizures, mania and hearing loss* • Long term side effects are not known* • Cost for patients: $8,000-12,000** * www.mayoclinic.com/health/transcranial-magnetic-stimulation/MY00185 * * www.usatoday.com/story/news/2012/11/30/magnets-zap-depression/1738621/

  19. Deep Brain Stimulation (DBS) • Requires major surgery while the patient is awake. Two holes are drilled in the skull. Two electrodes are implanted into the brain. They produce electrical impulses controlled by a device implanted under the skin in the chest.* • Warnings include surgical risks, paralysis, coma, and/or death. Leakage of the fluid surrounding the brain, seizures, infection and allergic response to the implanted material.** * www.mayoclinic.com/health/deep-brain-stimulation/MY00184 ** www.medtronic.com/downloadablefiles/220716003.pdf

  20. (DBS) Additional Side Effects • Potential side effects after surgery include tingling sensation, speech problems, Vision problems, dizziness, facial and limb muscle weakness or partial paralysis. Jolting or shocking sensations.* • You may also experience pain, lack of healing or infection. The brain’s stimulation system parts may wear through your skin. And finally you may need additional surgeries to re-adjust the location (2.7 on average).* • Cost for patients is about $50,000 for initial surgery. $10,000 or more for additional surgeries every few years to maintain the device, change the settings, and to replace the battery** * www.medtronic.com/downloadablefiles/220716003.pdf ** theconversation.com/deep-brain-stimulation-the-hidden-challenges-of-a-technological-fix-14395

  21. Vagus Nerve Stimulation (VNS) • A procedure that stimulates the vagus nerve with electrical impulses. A device is surgically implanted in the chest, and a wire connects it to the left vagus nerve. • Surgical complications can include pain, infection, incision scarring, difficulty swallowing and vocal cord paralysis. www.mayoclinic.com/health/vagus-nerve-stimulation/MY00183

  22. (VNS) Additional Side Effects • Side effects can include voice changes, hoarseness, throat pain, cough, headache, chest pain, breathing problems, difficulty swallowing, abdominal pain or nausea, tingling or prickling of the skin.* • Total cost can range from $21,000 to $34,000 for generator, electrode, surgical and hospital costs.** * www.mayoclinic.com/health/vagus-nerve-stimulation/MY00183 ** www.psychiatrictimes.com/articles/study-expands-vagus-nerve-stimulation-depression
