  5. Why Now? Why Topic and Focus? • Online learning the biggest trend in higher education in past decade. • Growth: 20% per annum for over a decade • CUNY has been very slow to this game • Interest in hybrid/online reaching a critical mass and critical stage of development • Early ad-hoc approaches on campuses are evolving into more focused, planned strategies for hybrid/online

Why Topic and Focus?continued • In strategic interest of colleges and the university to explore SP for hybrid/online • Online learning is a a strategic asset and needs to be properly administered • Potential: Equivalent to 2-3 campuses in teaching/learning impact CUNY-wide • Online has to potential to help transform teaching and learning at many institutions, including CUNY • "Disruptive technology/ application" • Can be an agent for change on campuses

Survey Focus and Methodology • Survey distributed to CAO and/ or technology director per campus • Looking for the "point-person" on each campus that decides hybrid/online policy • 20 campuses solicited, 17 responded • Still not too late if your campus has not participated •  Enough participation to make survey valid, indicative of trends

  8. Areas Addressed by Survey (24 Q's) Note: The term online also includes hybrid teaching Who is planning online teaching at campuses?  Is there a formal strategic plan in place for this process? What is the process for creating online policy? If there is a plan for online, what areas does it cover? Is the campus environment receptive to online? What are some implementation issues? What has been the impact on the institution? How do campuses see the role of CUNY Central?

  11. Questions • Is online education mission critical at CUNY? • Would a greater Central role be useful to the university and individual campuses? • What compelling vision for online can we come up with that might get buy-in from all stakeholders? • What are some next steps in this process?

  12. Next Steps • Online learning part of upcoming CUNY SP • Recognition of hybrid/online as consistent with mission, goals, and values of CUNY • Recognition of online as a strategic asset •  Start planning process for more Central input in this area
