  2. The Baptism of Jesus • Matthew 3:13-17 • Mark 1:9-11 • Luke 3:21,22 • The Baptist’s Testimony • John 1:32ff

  3. Mark 1:9-11 • And it came to pass in those days, that Jesus came from Nazareth of Galilee, and was baptized of John in Jordan. • And straightway coming up out of the water, he saw the heavens opened, and the Spirit like a dove descending upon him: • And there came a voice from heaven, saying, Thou art my beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased.

  4. From Matthew We Learn Matthew 3:13–14 • Then cometh Jesus from Galilee to Jordan unto John, to be baptized of him. • But John forbad him, saying, I have need to be baptized of thee, and comest thou to me?

  5. Why did John attempt to put Jesus off?

  6. John’s baptism was a baptism to call men to repentance

  7. In John’s baptism the candidate would confess sin Mark 1:5

  8. From Matthew We Learn Matthew 3:13–14 • Then cometh Jesus from Galilee to Jordan unto John, to be baptized of him. • But John forbad him, saying, I have need to be baptized of thee, and comest thou to me?

  9. John felt he was unworthy Look at Matthew 3:15

  10. Matthew 3:15 • And Jesus answering said unto him, Suffer [let] it to be so now: Jesus endorses John’s ministry and message by being baptized by John

  11. If Jesus wasn’t repenting and Jesus wasn’t confessing sin, why did he insist upon being baptized?

  12. Matthew 3:15 • And Jesus answering said unto him, Suffer [let] it to be so now: • for thus it becometh [fitting] us to fulfil all righteousness. From the beginning to the end!

  13. Commentary “To fulfill all righteousness” means to complete everything that forms part of a relationship of obedience to God.

  14. Matthew 26:42 • He went away again the second time, and prayed, saying, O my Father, if this cup may not pass away from me, except I drink it, thy will be done. Fulfill All Righteousness

  15. Fulfill All Righteousness “Dear God, Your will—nothing more, nothing less, nothing else, Amen.” Bobby Richardson NY Yankees Second Baseman

  16. Choosing Sides Who does Christ identify with when He is baptized in the same way John baptized others?

  17. Question What group is refusing John’s baptism?

  18. Matthew 3:7 • But when he saw many of the Pharisees and Sadducees come to his baptism, he said unto them, O generation of vipers, who hath warned you to flee from the wrath to come? Jesus wants nothing to do with the self-righteous, arrogant Jews who are more in love with religious tradition than a relationship with God.

  19. Evidently Jesus Understood It Was the Father’s Will for Him to submit to John’s Baptism

  20. The Mode Matthew 3:16 • And Jesus, when he was baptized, went up straightway out of the water: What does the mode picture?

  21. Mark 1:10 • And straightway coming up out of the water, he saw the heavens opened[schizō], God, the Father, rips the heavens open! From our perspective the heavens represent the divide between God and man.

  22. Mark 15:38 • And the veil of the temple was rent [schizō] in twain from the top to the bottom.

  23. Mark 1:10 • And straightway coming up out of the water, he saw the heavens opened, and the Spirit like a dove descending upon him: This visible manifestation of the Spirit emphasizes the special relationship the Spirit has to the Son.

  24. Commentary • This is the public declaration that God has sent His Son to the earth • Now the Spirit is sent to Son Look at Mark 1:12

  25. Luke 4:18 • The Spirit of the Lord is upon me, because he hath anointed me to preach the gospel to the poor; he hath sent me to heal the brokenhearted, to preach deliverance to the captives, and recovering of sight to the blind, to set at liberty them that are bruised,

  26. Mark 1:11 • And there came a voice from heaven, After 400 years of silence, God is now speaking again through first a prophet (the Baptizer) and now His Son.

  27. Mark 1:11 • And there came a voice from heaven, saying, Thou art my beloved Son, Heavenly Authentication

  28. Judge This If a audible voice did not speak from heaven consider the number of people who have been perpetuating this falsity from the 1st Century forward.

  29. Trinity @ the Baptism • The Father Speaks • The Spirit descends Like a Dove • The Son is physically baptized by John the Baptist Tri-Unity God eternally exists as three persons, Father, Son and Holy Spirit and each person is fully God, and there is one God.

  30. The Trinity • 3 Descriptive Statements • God is 3 distinct Persons. • Each Person is fully God. • There is one God.

  31. Mark 1:11 • And there came a voice from heaven, saying, Thou art my beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased.

  32. Consider This Every subsequent legitimate baptism ever conducted by Christians is predicated upon faith that Jesus is the beloved Son in whom the Father was [is] well pleased.

  33. Question Was the Son working to gain approval from the Father? No. Did Christ desire to please His Father? Yes.

  34. Galatians 4:4-6 • But when the fulness of the time was come, God sent forth his Son, made of a woman, made under the law, • To redeem them that were under the law, that we might receive the adoption of sons. And because ye are sons, God hath sent forth the Spirit of his Son into your hearts, crying, Abba, Father.

  35. Romans 8:14-16 • For as many as are led by the Spirit of God, they are the sons of God. For ye have not received the spirit of bondage again to fear; but ye have received the Spirit of adoption, whereby we cry, Abba, Father. The Spirit itself beareth witness with our spirit, that we are the children of God:

  36. Application • The Son of God models for us as children of God what our perspective should be. Turn to John 8:21-30

  37. John 20:21 • Then said Jesus to them again, Peace be unto you: • as my Father hath sent me, • even so send I you.

  38. Hebrews 11:6 • But without faith it is impossible to please him: for he that cometh to God must believe that he is, and that he is a rewarder of them that diligently seek him.

  39. Question How do the “Just” live? Romans 1:17

  40. 2 Timothy 2:4 • No man that warreth entangleth himself with the affairs of this life; • that he may please him who hath chosen him to be a soldier.

  41. A Gospel Centric Perspective • We don’t strive to gain right standing as a son or daughter—Christ has already fulfilled all righteousness • We strive to please Him or be approved of by Him because of who we are in Christ Jesus
