  1. Essay – Are there arguments in favour of stereotyping? What did you find difficult? What did you find easy? Did you surprise yourself?

  2. Choose a group of people and describe some of the stereotypes that you see in the media. Say whether you think the stereotypes are changing? • Physically/Mentally impaired • Stereotypes: • Pitiable, evil, super cripple, burden, comic – joke is on them, non-sexual • Timeline – history, texts, theory

  3. Geraghty • Exotic - Mentally/Physically disabled characters are used in a segregated way simply to create action/excitement/shock. • Singleton – The text is solely about the disability – the character only has a place in the text because of his/her disability. • Incorporated – The characters disability is not the main focus of the text – they are incorporated in t the text in other ways.

  4. Example:What is good about it? • The stereotype of the disabled person as sinister or evil is commonly used in horror and action films. This stereotype is used to add shock/excitement. This supports Geraghty’s theory of exotic: the representation of disabled characters are used in a segregating way to add excitement. This stereotype is evident in The HunchBack of Notre Dame (1922). The hunchback is represented as being a freak who has been outcasted from society and become sinister. In the film he is shown to have animalistic characteristics by jumping from the church. At this time the film would have been reinforcing the ideology that if you are sinful you will be punished by God. • We still see the representation of a disabled people as evil in James Bond Casino Royale. The main villain has a glass eye that bleeds and this also supports Geraghty’s theory of exotic. However the previous stereotype that those who act sinfully will be punished by God is not evident.

  5. Pick one of the remaining stereotypes and write your own paragraph – Are stereotypes changing? • Pitiable • Non-sexual • Burden • Comic • Super cripple
