In-Text Citations: When do I need them? You need in text citations whenever you are inserting information into your paper from one of your resources.
For example: If my paper is on Justin Bieber. HERE IS MY RESOURCE:Justinbieberzone.com Justin Bieber’s mother, Pattie Mallette, was 18 years old when she became pregnant with her son. Mallette, who worked a series of low-paying office jobs, raised Justin Bieber as a single mother in low-income housing. However, Justin Bieber maintains contact with his father, Jeremy Bieber, who married another woman and had two children. Here is what I am saying in my paper: Justin Bieber, known across the globe as a hearthrob, singing sensation, was born to a teenage mother at the young age of eighteen (justinbieberzone.com). NOTICE! I put my parenthesis and then my period. ( ).
YOU MUST PUT YOUR ( ) and then your . DO NOT DO THIS!! YOU WILL GET POINTS TAKEN OFF!!! Justin Bieber was born July 9, 1999. (justinbieberszone.com).
The citation always goes at the end of the sentence, unless you are inserting information from two sources in one sentence. In that case, you would do the following. Justin Bieber grew up in Texas (justinbieberzone.com) but his biological father lived in South Dakota while Justin was a child (Jones 35).
Other in-text citations examples: For a book: authors last name and page #. Do NOT put pg. or page, just author’s last name and page #. (Chambers 5) or (Chambers 5-6) NOT (Chambers, pg. 56) For a book with more than one author: If there are only two authors, than you put both authors names in the citation. If there are two or more, you put the authors last name which comes first in the alphabet. Ex 1: A book whose authors last names are Chambers and Teasely. (Chambers &Teasely 56) Ex 2: A book whose authors are Chambers, Teasely, and Adams. (Adams 58)
