  2. Born in Boston, Massachusetts to struggling actors Orphaned at 3 years old taken in by John and Frances Allan Entered the University of Virginia, but left within a year due to drinking & gambling. Allan refused to help with the $2,000 in debt that Poe accumulated Edgar Allan Poe (1809-1849)

Edgar Allan poecontinued… • At 18, he fights with Allan and joins the army, but is discharged 2 years later • In 1834, Allan dies and leaves Poe nothing • At 26, he proposes to his 13 year old cousin, Virginia Clemm • In 1847, Virginia Clemm dies of tuberculosis • Poe dies in Baltimore, Maryland on October 7, 1849
