Development of indicators on energy use in agriculture CAPRI Workshop 8.3.2004 –10.3.2004 This Presentation has been prepared with the support of theSwiss Federal Office for Education and Science FOES, Berne, Switzerland
Contents • Objectives • Previous results from CAPRI-project 1997-1999 • Energy consumption calculation method • System limitations • Energy input of production activities • Data demand for direct and indirect energy input • Scheduled work programme • Timetable • Points of discussion
Objectives Developing a module for calculating the energy use of agriculture in all CAPRI-countries
Energy Consumption Calculation Method KEA (Cumulated energy consumption, MJ):Total of primary energetic input which is related to the production, utilisation, and disposal of a good (Federation of German Engineers, VDI 1995).
System Limitations Energy demand for production activities in CAPRI-countries Energy demand for production and transport of imported intermediate products Energy demand for production and transport of exported intermediate products Total Energy demand = + -
Data Demand for Direct Energy Input (Example crop activity) • Fuel consumption • Machine type and equipment for soil preparation, application of fertilisers and pesticides etc. • Number of applications • Average fuel consumption of machine type and work process • Existent in Switzerland • Machinery inventory • Expertises • Life cycle inventories of agricultural production systems [www. ecoinvent.ch]
Data Demand for Direct Energy Input (Example animal activity) • Electricity consumption • Housing systems • Production period per animal • Electricity demand for housing systems Existent in Switzerland • Expertises about housing systems • Field investigations done for electricity demand of housing systems
Data Demand for Indirect Energy Input (Example crop production) • Use of Fertiliser • Type of mineral fertiliser • Energy input for the production of one kilo fertiliser • Applied mineral fertiliser per crop activity • Existent in Switzerland • Life cycle inventories of agricultural production systems [www. ecoinvent.ch]
Data Demand for Indirect Energy Input (Example crop activity) • Annual machine energy input • Weight and material of machines used • Depreciation of total energy requirements over the years • Energy input coefficients for the production and maintenance of the machines • Existent in Switzerland • Machinery inventory • Life cycle inventories of agricultural production systems [www. ecoinvent.ch]
Scheduled Work Programme • Defining typical production systems for CAPRI-countries • Defining 5-10 typical crop production and housing systems per product group in the EU • Attributing the typical systems to the production activities in the NUTS II regions. • Teamwork with FAL Braunschweig and project TIPI-CAL?
Scheduled Work Programme • Interface to existing CAPRI data base has to be defined • Data collection for typical production systems • Statistical records • Expertises • Environmental inventories
Scheduled Work Programme • Formulating a module for calculating energy use written in GAMS • Formulating a projection-module to forcast energy input data • Simulations and impact analysis
Timetable (1. year) • Literature review (3 month) • Conceptual phase (4) • Working paper (7, d17) • Defining typical production systems (4) • Defining interface CAPRI (1)
Timetable • Data collection (8) • Formulating a module in GAMS (4) Validated Gams code (24 , d18) • Formulating a projection module (5) • Simulation runs, Scenario analysis (7)
Points of discussion • Data collection – which East European region to include? • Level of detail of energy use? • Different energy inputs or total input? • Interface to existing CAPRI data base – what do we know already?
