  1. Introduction: the importance of the first stone Today’s text: Peter 2: 4-8

  2. Recognize the foundation • Consider your genes • As chips off the old block we have become stones that are used to build the spiritual household of God. • " ... members of God's household, built on the foundation of the apostles and prophets, with Christ Jesus himself as the chief cornerstone. In him the whole building is joined together and rises to become a holy temple in the Lord. And in him you too are being built together to become a dwelling in which God lives by his Spirit." Eph. 3:20-22 • "Listen to me, you who pursue righteousness and who seek the LORD? Look to the rock from which you were cut and to the quarry from which you were hewn;” Isa 51:1

  3. Consider the stone • "This is My beloved Son in whom I am well pleased ... " Mark 1:11 • Consider your confidence • Peter says, “…and the one who trusts in him will never be put to shame”. • .

  4. Recognize those who stumble on stones • Belief brings divine recognition • just as God has honored his Son and exalted Him, so we to will be honored by the Father because we believed as well • Disbelief and rejection bring spiritual poverty • does not affect His value • does not affect His ultimate place • Cornerstone and Capstone • .

  5. Other stone issues to consider • We are a spiritual house under construction • Don't you know that you yourselves are God's temple and that God's Spirit lives in you? Do you not know that your body is a temple of the Holy Spirit, who is in you, whom you have received from God? You are not your own; you were bought at a price. Therefore honor God with your body. 1Cor. 3:16-19

  6. What spiritual sacrifices are you offering? • Offering of prayer • Offering of thanksgiving • Offering of praise • Offering of our bodies as living sacrifices Rom 12:1-2 • Offering of our tithes • Offering of souls saved Rom 15:16

  7. We are a holy priesthood • We have direct access to God • Jesus has become our lamb of sacrifice • Jesus has torn away the veil • We now come before God in a personal relationship • We now serve God by ministering to others • We all have a place in God's economy • We all have spiritual gifts to use • We are now His priests to the world declaring that though we were once in darkness we are now children of light.

  8. Peter makes it clear that there is a rock that can be trusted like no other. He says, “…and the one who trusts in him will never be put to shame.” If it were not so, Jesus would have told us. • What spiritual sacrifices are you offering? • Belief in the death, burial and resurrection of Jesus is a privilege in this life – it is an honor. However, not believing in Jesus as the savior does not change His value; it only brings spiritual poverty on the one who does not believe. Please do not stumble over this Stone and fall, but believe and find honor and find life.
