  3. Pedicure • Latin • Pedis = foot • Care of the feet and toenails

  4. Purpose of Pedicures • Improve the appearance of the feet and the nails • Foot care not only improves appearance , but adds to the comfort of the feet

  5. Equipment • PP 845 - 847

  6. Implements • Must be disinfected, sanitized or disposed of after use • Small enough to fit into a disinfectant container • PP 847 – 849 (caution boxes PP 849)

  7. Sanitation for Implements • Wash with soap and warm water, rinse • Metal implements must be completely immersed in container filled with an approved disinfectant. (Follow manufacturers’ instructions for required time). • Rinse and dry thoroughly with clean towels • Store Properly - Follow state regulations for storage

  9. Cosmetics • Develop a strong working knowledge of cosmetics and what ingredients they contain • You need to know how to apply each cosmetic • Know when to avoid using a product due to allergies or sensitivities • PP 850 – 851

  10. The pedicure station • Messy station creates a bad impression • Neat station will help client feel confident about your abilities • Follow all rules of sanitation and disinfection • Do not ask client to sit at dirty station • PP 817

  11. Client Consultation • Talk to the client • Complete a client health record and service and product card • Discuss client’s general health, lifestyle, needs, and services to be offered • Use your knowledge to select the most appropriate service

  12. Analysis: • Information-gathering • Ask questions • Touch the skin, nails – educate the client • Recommendations: • Explain benefits and results of the recommended service (s) • Home care products and how to use

  13. Portray yourself in a professional manner • Focus on client • Look directly at client while speaking in a tone that demonstrates integrity and confidence • Support your recommendations with facts and information • Be friendly and helpful

  14. Discussing client’s general health • Diabetic • Carefully file and push Pterygium • NEVER nip cuticles • Heal slowly easily get infections • Damage can be deadly if skin is cut or scrapped • Arthritis - feet held gently

  17. Based on principle of areas of the feet correspond to organs, glands, and parts of the body • Stimulating reflexes or pressure points can transmit positive energy and increase blood flow to the specified area

  20. The Plain Pedicure • Three part procedure: • Pre-service function • Actual procedure • Post-service function • Discuss products used and suggest products for use at home

  21. Handling Blood During a Pedicure • Put on gloves • Apply Pressure • Stanch Bleeding • Complete service • Discard used materials • Clean table and disinfect implements • Remove gloves and wash hands

  26. Massage manipulations should be second nature • Practice until they become routine • Foot massage – • Excellent way to build client loyalty • Gentle but firm in pressure • Tickling sensation if touch is too light

  27. Choosing products PP 851 - 852 • Check out variety of product lines and compare • Check quality of products and educational support • Check commitment to nail tech cosmetologist • Use according to mfg. directions

  28. Service Menu PP 852 • Tailor service to meet needs of clients • Short services = menu expanders • Nail trimming • Pampering • Polish change

  29. Interaction during service PP 852 - 853 • Discuss products for maintenance • Some do not like to talk and relax instead • No distractions such as phone calls • Reschedule next appointment for continued care • 4 weeks • Proper foot care improves appearance of feet and basic foot comfort

  30. Scheduling PP 853 - 854 • Shave legs 48 hours prior to service • Increase presence of many microscopic abrasions • Allow portals of entry for pathogenic microbes • Stinging, irritation or infection • Post tasteful sign about shaving legs • Reschedule if within 24 hours

  31. Suggest they wear open-toed shoes • Schedule for proper length of time • Technician NEEDS to stay ON time • Everyone HATES to wait! • Does salon give a massage with plain Pedicure?

  32. Extra time required for add-on services • Rushing a pedicure can give you a back ache • Cramming too much in too little time • If feet in too bad a condition do NOT over work • Cause pain or irritation to client

  34. Series Pedicures PP 854 - 855 • Some improvements require several treatments • Do NOT use blades to remove calluses • Perform a safe amount of exfoliation with a scrub • Use foot file or paddle to remove calluses • 4 – 6 treatments

  35. Scaly feet requires series of treatments • Send to Podiatrist to ensure scales are not a fungus • Home care products can be used to maintain improved conditions

  36. Spa PedicuresPP 855 - 856 • Mask or masque applied to feet and legs • Skin softeners • Clays • Aromatherapy oils • Moisturizing agents

  37. Elderly Clients PP 856 • Need regular year round foot care • Cannot reach foot to trim nails • Cannot squeeze trimmers • Foot care can become a health issue • Do not perform on diabetics or those with circulatory disease without physician’s consent

  38. Pedicure Pricing PP 856 - 857 • Determine basic price and add from there • More upscale and luxurious more expensive • Nail art = upgrade

  39. Men’s Pedicure • Conservative • Square shape • Matte or dull finish

  40. Paraffin Wax Pedicure • Traps moisture • Heat opens pores • Exfoliates dead skin cells • Increases blood circulation • Petroleum by product • Sealing properties • Holds moisture

  41. 125 ° - 130 ° • Use only approved heaters • Will not harm artificial or natural nails

  42. Procedure for Handling Blood Spills • Gloves • Slight pressure • Apply styptic • Bandage • Discard materials • Wash hands • Complete service • Disinfect/sterilize
