Pre-class Week 10. Turnarounds. Turnarounds. How to get back to the top. Purpose. Purpose of a turnaround is last few measures point back to the start. In blues this is very common. Also in other forms – jazz particularly. Not as hard as you might think – will start with blues turnarounds.

  3. Purpose • Purpose of a turnaround is last few measures point back to the start. • In blues this is very common. • Also in other forms – jazz particularly. • Not as hard as you might think – will start with blues turnarounds.

  5. Learn these • Once you can do a couple of these try them in different keys • Work on all of them – each one try in a different key – in fact in all keys. • Work on ideas of your own with these as a starting point.

  6. Jazz and Pop • For jazz and pop it is usually the last 4 measures but it can be the last 2 also. • Most common is:4/4||: I | IVm |IIm | V7 : || In C C Am Dm G7 • Variations of this are many such as: 4/4||: I | IVm |IV | V7 : || C Am F G7

  8. There are others • There are many other ways. • In fact, you can use the blues one for many jazz and pop tunes. • You can also use the previous ones on some blues songs. • The whole idea is to end on something that points the listener back to the beginning of the song.

  9. Thrill Is Gone • This is a standard minor blues: • Form is: • ||: Im | | | | IVm | | Im | | bVI|V7| Im | : || • Song is in the key of Bm: • ||: Bm | | | | Em | | Bm | | G|F#7| Bm | : || • We will start with an outline of the beginning solo which is also the introduction to the song.

  10. (e) The first 4 measures are all in Bm. If you look closely you will see that most of the notes are chord tones. If you think of the chord as a Bm7 then all but the 3 E’s are chord tones. This entire section is played in 7th position. Not even one note is out of that position. The scale used for this is the B minor pentatonic scale in the E from. Make sure that you learn that scale.

  11. Start at 10th position At this point play in 7th position. The melody on the G to F#7 is really exciting. But for the G it is the 5th of the chord to the 6th to the 5th back to the 3rd of the chord. F#7 is the 7th to the 6th back to the 7th. Again chord tones. Then the Bm Uses the 3rd and the root. The double stop at the end is the root and 5th. Chord tones all the way. While not adventuresome it is very melodic this way and works well in this song. Lot’s to think about with this.

  12. Now work on hammering and pulling • Do the exercises listed before. • Apply to the blues scale and the mixolydian mode.

  13. Bending Notes • This could be a whole course but we will start with the basics. • On the first 2 strings you always bend the strings upward towards the sky. On the bottom 2 strings you must bend them downward. Typically the middle 2 strings are also bent up but could be bent either way if you are only bending one note and not holding another note. • Use the side of your fretting hand index finger to give you leverage! • There are a variety of bends that need to be accomplished.

  15. C form to the next one is A form to the G form to the E form below Lastly the D form Now look at these the C form 4th finger goes to the A form end finger. Go up 3 frets from the A form for the G form, the G form pinky goes to the E form 2nd finger and then up 2 frets to the D form. There are notes that are the same in each of these. See arrows.

  28. Start with the chords. • Only 3 chords A, D and E • Even though it is simple it is fun to do. • Sometimes these easy songs have quite a bit to do. • If singing the harmony will make this piece. • Whole piece is: 4/4 ||: A | D E : || Timing on next page.

  29. On beat 4 of the 2nd measure that open E is played on the last 1/16th note of the beat. You could also play the chord or just the first 2 strings of the chord. This must be played with an up stroke.
