Why Seek Alternatives to Higher Education? • University education is not for everyone • Cultural Norms & Social Mobility • Increasing tuition fees • Increases in Graduate unemployment • Student Debt: Students who begin their courses at universities in England next year are likely to graduate with nearly £60,000 in debt. (Source: NUS ) • What impact will RPA have on the employment and training market? • Fast changing labour market

Apprenticeships • A gateway to employment and progression at all levels: Entry; Intermediate; Advanced; Higher • >200 different types of apprenticeships; > 1,200 job roles and increasing • Political and Business support for Apprenticeships • Minimum 12 months duration comprising on the job and off the job training and certification • £250m to boost business investment in skills & apprenticeships • £1,500 payment incentives to smaller employers to recruit new apprentices • £25m invested in higher apprenticeships, supporting programmes up to degree equivalent

Different ways of Achieving a Degree: Distance Learning • Many Universities now offering part time & distance learning Degrees • Virtual classrooms and online forums provide group discussion & access to tutors • Better suited to certain types of student, including those familiar with Access to HE or FD students, with employment history • Open University, best known provider of distance learning degrees: 30,000 students under 25 • Comments include: ‘often extraordinary people who have overcome considerable challenges’….’highly motivated self starting students organising their time around other commitments’.

  6. Vocational Qualifications Outside University • 362 UK FE Colleges providing a wide range of academic and vocational qualifications, including apprenticeships and degree courses • Many offer 2 year Foundation degrees, either in partnership with Universities (University Award) or FEC Award • More practically based with academic study • FDs can be topped up to full degrees • Degree courses at FECs; Fees more likely to be < £6k p.a. from September 2012 • Locally available; often smaller class sizes and greater 1:1 tutor contact • 1 in 8 young people now decide to complete their higher education in FE

Other Alternatives Studying & Working Abroad • UK ranks 25th in the world for the number of students studying overseas • Universities & Science Minister promoting a strategy of outward mobility • Many European Universities offer some Undergraduate Courses in English • No tuition fees or smaller fee levels than UK • Erasmus scheme can provide fee waiver and a grant for a full year abroad as an integral part of a UK University course • From 2014/15 financial support will extend to student placements at overseas institutions outside Erasmus scheme (within & outside EU)

  8. Entrepreneurship & Volunteering • £10 million Start Up Loan scheme launched May 2012 by DBiS • 18-24 year olds can apply for start up loans with access to personal support to help develop business plans & access training Business in You – Government website includes information on start up loans www.businessinyou.bis.gov.uk/ • Volunteering including VSO provide opportunities to extend skills and experience & make a contribution to society • Local volunteering opportunities available with local Charities (Councils for Voluntary service etc) • VSO has placements in over 30 countries worldwide: http://www.vso.org.uk/volunteer/opportunities/index.asp
