  3. Novena • Nine-day period of religious devotion • Children go house-to-house to recite Christmas poems • They receive small coins to buy sweets

Other Traditions • Children write letters to parents wishing them a wonderful Christmas celebration and promising to be good. • On Christmas Eve, many candles are lit as children take turns telling the story of Christmas and the birth of the holy “bambino.” • Families gather around the “Presepio”, a shrine to the Holy Child, and pray.

  5. Christmas Eve • A day of abstinence from meat • Evening meal is a lavish banquet • Gifts are distributed after Midnight Mass • Mother places the Bambino in the manger on Christmas morning

  6. Traditions Originating in Italy • Nativity scene • Christmas Carols • On the evening of the day after Christmas, Strega Buffana – a good witch – visits the children leaving treats for good children and coal for naughty children.

  7. The Epiphany – January 6 • Main exchange of gifts takes place • Tradition says the presents are delivered by a kind, ugly witch called Befana, on a broomstick.
