The Mission of the Centre for Biomedical Ethics • Initiating multi-disciplinary research projects in biomedical ethics in collaboration with colleagues in the biomedical sciences and in clinical medicine • Planning and implementation of an integrated teaching programme in medical ethics for undergraduate medical students • International collaborative research, linking with centres in the USA, Australasia and Europe • Collaboration with ethics governance and advisory bodies in Singapore, especially the Bioethics Advisory Committee • Enhancement of public understanding of the ethical issues in biomedicine • Promotion of conferences and seminars in biomedical ethics at national, regional and international level
Expansion of the scope of the Centre for Biomedical Ethics • Establish Singapore as a premier centre for training and research • Create a research resource for the Bioethics Advisory Committee of the Singapore government • Provide training in ethics for biomedical scientists in the research institutions of Singapore and for scientific collaborators in the region • Improve the public’s involvement in, and understanding of, the ethical issues in cutting edge biomedical research and its practical applications • Create a cadre of Singapore trained bioethicists, who can improve the level of bioethics training and research throughout the region
