4.2 Patterns and Linear Functions Objective: To identify and represent patterns that describe linear functions
4.2 Patterns and Linear Functions • Solve it on page 240 www.pearsonsuccessnet.com • Identify quantities in the picture that vary in response to other quantities. Describe the relationship.
4.2 Patterns and Linear Functions • Variables whose values depend on the another variable are dependent variables. • Dependent variables change in response to another variable (Independent variable). • The Independent variable causes the change.
4.2 Patterns and Linear Functions • Values of Dependent variables are outputs. • Values of Independent variable are inputs. • Graphs, tables, sets of ordered pairs, words and equations represent these relationships.
4.2 Patterns and Linear Functions • Example 1: Relationship between number of rectangles and perimeter of the figure with a table. 1 1 1 1 1 1 6 6 6
4.2 Patterns and Linear Functions • Example 1: Relationship between number of rectangles and perimeter of the figure with words. 1 1 1 1 1 1 6 6 6
4.2 Patterns and Linear Functions • Example 1: Relationship between number of rectangles and perimeter of the figure with equation. 1 1 1 1 1 1 6 6 6
4.2 Patterns and Linear Functions • Example 1: Relationship between number of rectangles and perimeter of the figure with graph. 1 1 1 1 1 1 6 6 6
4.2 Patterns and Linear Functions • In the last example the perimeter is a function of the number of rectangles. • Which variable is dependent variable? • Which variable is independent?
4.2 Patterns and Linear Functions • A function is a relationship that pairs each input with EXACTLY one output. • INPUT • Independent variable • OUTPUT • Dependent • Variable FUNCTION
4.2 Patterns and Linear Functions • A Linear function is a function whose graph is a nonvertical line. • Problem 2: Table represents number of photos, x, you took and the amount of memory y left on your camera. P 242
