Charge to the Consortium • This is a one-year planning grant whose goal is to define a working consortium focused on education of providers regarding globally mobile populations • We will be discussing core competencies in effective care for mobile populations, analyzing gaps in current training and developing education and training recommendations • We will draft a proposed structure for an ongoing consortium – Minnesota based, and possibly broader • At the end of the year, Medtronic Foundation has agreed to convene interested funders to present our proposal
Charge to the Consortium • We will have one pilot project, which Consortium members may choose to implement in their care system • HealthPartners has developed educational videos in Spanish and Somali (with further languages in development) on preventive health services such as mammogram, pap and colonoscopy. Videos are narrated by HealthPartners bilingual/bicultural physicians • Consortium members will be asked to implement these videos in their care systems and measure impact of the intervention • Although this is a patient education intervention, it will demonstrate our ability to share educational materials and processes across care systems
Long term goal of the Consortium… better health for all • If funded, a Consortium on Health and Mobility will work collaboratively to reduce health care disparities for globally mobile populations by educating providers.
Guiding principles for the Consortium Medical education should: • Occur within the context of practicing medicine in the global village – which is not “here” or “over there”, but everywhere • Acknowledge that there are core competencies in cross-cultural healthcare and global medicine which all practicing providers should achieve • Be integrated across the continuum of a physician’s training • Be multidisciplinary and collaborative, utilizing wide spread expertise within Minnesota, the US and international partners • Provide measurable educational successes which contribute to reducing health disparities
