“Miiisssss!!!! Advisory is boring!” • Here’s your chance to make advisory fun…and help make yourself a better student!
Tell me about your favorite… My students like all kinds of cool stuff… And I want to hear about it! So YOU are going to plan a presentation about your favorite topic. Whatever you want! Anything APPROPRIATE! But…first you’ll need some skills…
PAST TOPICS • Chapped Lips • Turtles • The concept of SWAG • The Juvenile Prison System • WRITE DOWN 3 TOPICS YOU WOULD BE INTERESTED IN RESEARCHING NOW.
My presentations, or… Which one is better?
Characteristics of Good Public Speakers VERBALSCORE: 1. Confident Voice 2. Look at 10-15 individuals in the audience 3. Don’t read off their notes/PowerPoint 4. Lots of practice before their speech
Confident Voice • Be confident of yourself • You are the expert! • Everyone in the room is on your team • Some may want to script what they are going to say in order to help them practice
Eye Contact • People feel more connected to the speaker when that speaker is making eye contact with them. • Engage your entire audience
Don’t Read the Slide! • We can all read, so don’t read off the slide. • Talk about bullet points and pictures on your PowerPoint. • The best presenters are those that can expand on what is already in the PowerPoint.
Practice • No one does great at anything on the first try. • You need to practice what you are going to say so that you are prepared the day of the presentation.
Am I getting graded? • You will be assessed in 4 categories: • Powerpoint • Presentation • Timing (2-5 min – the closer to 5, the better) • Entertainment • Worried about making a good powerpoint? • Let’s talk. Overall: 0 - 4
Making A Fun PowerPoint • Use as FEW of words as possible • A picture says a thousand words • You can put notes below the PowerPoint and you can reference these during the presentation. • Presenter Tools
Everyone Loves the Movies • Inserting SHORT movie clips into a presentation makes it more fun. • The movie MUST be connected to your presentation. • You can drop YouTube clips into a PowerPoint by going to keepvid.com • You can then drag the video clip into the PowerPoint
Ditch that Boring Background • No one likes to see just a white background • There are good templates on PowerPoint and there are websites that you can download for free from. • www.fppt.com • Or use lots of pictures to help get your message across!
Structure of Your Power Point • Start with something to hook your audience. • Sell me on the relevance (the connection to your topic)! This is your chance to make it exciting!
Structure of Your PowerPoint • Engage your audience. • This should be like a conversation. No one likes to just be talked at.
Structure of Your PowerPoint • Make sure the flow of your PowerPoint makes logical sense.
Citations • You must cite all of your sources at the end of your PowerPoint • You may use MLA or APA format • Failing to cite sources will lead to a deduction of point. • http://www.easybib.com/ • Generates citations for you!
Good Luck! Goals for this week: • Finalize your PowerPoint. If you think it is done, send it to my email EnglishMsVance@gmail.com • Run through your presentation at least once with a friend. • Due at End of Week – PowerPoint (if completed) and tools you will use to assist your presentation.
