Funding for SCCA • Partnered with DHEC to secure and implement the $300,000 CDC Comprehensive Cancer Implementation Grant and fund priority Cancer Plan objectives • Raised $50,000 in private funds in 2004 • Provides staff to coordinate task forces • Awarded $272,000 in community cancer control mini-grants with DHEC

Prevention Subcommittees and Work Groups Physical Activity/Nutrition Subcommittee Pansy Yates and Susan Frost, Co-Chairs Works with statewide partners to improve behaviors and policies related to dietary choices and physical activity patterns associated with cancer prevention Tobacco Subcommittee Dianne Wilson, Chair Works with the SC Tobacco Collaborative, DHEC Tobacco Division and many local partners to reduce tobacco use among both youth and adults, and to create and promote policies to eliminate second-hand smoke in SC

PreventionSubcommittees and Work Groups Environmental and Ultraviolet Exposure Subcommittee Dottye Wodogaza and Amy Steele, Co-Chairs Works with partners to increase use of protective measures against skin cancer, and is beginning work to provide a balanced perspective of environmental cancer risk in SC Cancer Education Guide Workgroup Musette Hoefer and Diane Klebanow, Co-Chairs Joint effort with the Early Detection Task Force that has been working to revise the original WCC Cancer Education Guide presentation, to develop supporting materials and educational programs related to the Guide, and to host regional trainings across SC so that laypersons and professionals can bring the cancer prevention and early detection messages to their communities.

Research Subcommittees and Work Groups Research Recruitment Subcommittee Dr. John Ureda, Chair Address recruitment issues (barriers, access, representation) in all cancer research studies with particular focus on clinical trials Create culturally appropriate methods (brochures, pamphlets, television ads, etc.) to increase minority awareness and participation in cancer research (clinical trials) Tissue Bank Subcommittee Dr. Bill Butler, Dr. Buckhaults, Camille Washowich Establish a statewide accessible tissue bank for cancer research Develop methods that will enable tissue to be shared across the state for use in approved protocols. Ensure “link-ability” of all data across various sources.

  26. Survivor & Family Task Force Judith DeNoyior and Delores Smith, Chairs Jim Allen, Coordinator Allenj@dhec.sc.gov 843-413-6434 Goal:To give cancer patients, survivors and families support and information to help connect them with available resources on the local, state and national levels.

Survivor & Family Subcommittees and Work Groups Patient Navigator Committee Deidre Young, Chair Works with statewide partners to develop a Patient Navigator program that effectively uses trained individuals to provide information and resources to targeted individuals in such a way as to increase their ability to access, navigate and utilize the health care system and its resources. Comprehensive Resource System Committee Simbonika Spencer, Chair and Lorene Godbold, Chair Works with tha American Cancer Society and other state and national organizations to develop a Comprehensive Cancer Resource System for South Carolina.

Survivor & FamilySubcommittees and Work Groups Long Term Survivorship Issues Committee Diane Gluck, Chair Works with state and national organizations to identify and implement programs that enhance the quality of life for cancer survivors and their families in such areas as: Physical, Psychological, and Emotional Wellbeing. Promotion Committee Anthony Coggiola, Chair Works with the marketing departments of SC ETV, regional hospitals, and other health providers to develop a media infrastructure to promote cancer survivorship issues. Currently, this committee is using the upcoming PBS Special, “A Lion in the House”, scheduled to air on SC ETV on June 21-22, to develop a media platform to promote future SCCA Programs. Finance Goals and Purpose: To work with the Treasurer and Executive Committee in preparing and monitoring the budget for the SCCA To ensure that the SCCA has adequate financial resources to accomplish its mission; To develop innovative ways for utilizing resources to expand the capacity of the SCCA

  33. Awards Awards- Solicits nominations for and presents annual awards to individuals, groups and organizations that demonstrate excellence in the areas of cancer policy work, early detection, patient care, prevention, research and survivor/family.
