PEMDAS-Order of Operations PEMDAS is an acronym which stands for : Using Order of Operations combines two or more mathematical symbols. Parenthesis Exponents Multiplication Division Addition Subtraction It is the order in which you must perform mathematical operations in order to get a correct answer. Example: 22 – 12 + 5 (3) = 25 The first operation to be completed was the parenthesis, 5x3 = 15. Now the number sentence is 22 – 12 + 15. Addition and subtraction should be done in the order they appear from L to R, as should multiplication and division. 22 – 12 + 15 = 25.
Other Symbols for Multiplication • Multiplication can be represented with parenthesis (5)(3). • It can also be represented with an asterisk, although it is not as common. * • When using variables, a number next to a variable represents multiplication. 4Y means 4 times Y.
Can You Solve This? • 80 + (6)(3) + 12 ÷ 4 -1= • A. 111 • B. 26.5 • C. 100 • D. 102
