The Great Storm of 1987 was the worst storm in nearly 300 years and claimed 22 lives in just a three-hour period on the night of October 15 and early hours of October 16/.The lunchtime weather reports had dismissed talk of a severe weather storm, with forecaster Michael Fish assuring viewers that they were not true. He said: "earlier on today apparently a woman rang the BBC and said she'd heard there was a hurricane on the way. "Well if you are watching don't worry, there isn't." In the event winds gusted at a speed of up to 115 miles an hour across the UK and France.
