500BC-1585AD • American Indian tribes lived here in 500bc. • The Indians traveled by foot or by dugout canoes. • The Indians wore moccasins wile they hunt. • When they are hunting they need to require moccasins to protect a large spot on there feet.

1585-1770 • Indians and European settlers lived in North Carolina at this time. • The Europeans brought new ways to travel (carriages) and they brought diseases with them. • The Indians and Europeans rode horses , carts , carriages , and big ships or they walked. • The Europeans bought supplies and they demanded huge trades but the Indians depended on what they got.
1585-1770The Great Wagon Road • The path to North Carolina from the North called “The Great Wagon Road”. • The immigrates come to North Carolina from where did the immigrates to the United States from Pennsylvania, Maryland , and Virginia. • Immigrates coming to North Carolina where taking up space. • Numbers of people kept coming and did this until the American Revolution. • The immigrates made our earliest town.
1585-1770 They had to travel out and over mountains very large rivers. When they were near stores and houses they would by food for there selves and there horses then they would leave. Travelers had to cross several major rivers and steep mountain passes and it was not easy to cross by a wagon. The great wagon road starts from Philadelphia and ended in Wachovia the Moravian settlement . Today interstate 81 passes through Harrisburg south through the Shenandoah Valley.
Great Wagon Road1585-1770 • Did you know that an other name for the Great Wagon Road is the Great Philadelphia Wagon Road. • Also the settlers cut down trees, found suitable ford across rivers and they worked around obstacles until the wagons could cross there for in time for the Great Wagon Road was improved by colonial standers • Also Lord Charles Cornwallis and his army used the Great Wagon Road as a road to attempt to destroy Nathaniel Greene’s army. • Also because of the rail roads and new roads in each town fell in disuse and in many areas the Great Wagon Road disappeared.
Great Wagon Road1585 - 1770 • People came to establish towns. • It was muddy, bumpy, dusty, and slow. • Wagons got stuck damaged from the large rocks in the, road.
1585 – 1770Queen Anne’s Revenge . Black beard was looking for ships to battle in the ocean blue . Black beard parked the Queen Anne’s Revenge at Beaufort Inlet . The Queen Anne’s Revenge is under water twenty ft of water off fort Macon ARRG!!!!!
1770-1830 • In this period of time North Carolina was called the Rip Van Winkle state. • North Carolina was called the Rip Van Winkle state because NC was slow to develop economically • People had a hard time transporting goods because North Carolina’s Legislative Branch didn’t want to use money to improve transportation. • It was very hard to make a living in North Carolina at this time. • In the mountains there were poor roads, aviculture, and education. • North Carolina made a few improvements like better roads and better canals.
1770-1830Canals 1.The first canal built in NC was the Dismal Swamp canal. 2.It was fully finished in 1812.It connected the Chesapeake bay with the Albemarle Sound. 3.They were hard to build because there are very expensive ,so it was hard to get the supplies. 4.The event of railroads made canals to no longer to be needed 5.They are used to incress the quality of “water front” properties.
Lighthouse • Light where so important so sailers don’t run into rocks. • The shoals of nc was called the atlinic graveyard. • There are 7 lighthoues on nc. • The first lighthouse on nc was called baldheads . • Concross looked for alternitive lighthoues because they coast to much.
Time Review 1830 - 1900 • Wagons and horseless carriages are two things that were introduced at this time period. • Plank roads replaced dirt roads. • Railroads were important because they helped bring North Carolina out of the Rip Van Winkle period of it’s history.
Plank Roads 1830-1900 • To start building a plank road workers clear a road bed. Then they elevate the center of the road (so that water can drain). Workers then lay wood sills for support. Finally pine planks are laid on top. • Money for plank roads came from the profit that some roads made. Also, towns that wanted to benefit from trading on the roads donated money. • The longest plank road was from Fayetteville to Salem. It was called The Fayetteville and Western. This huge wooden road was 129 miles long. • Plank roads weren’t as good because 1.They competed with railroads, which were faster. 2.Timing for construction was bad. 3.Travelers weren’t paying their tolls. 4.Plank roads took lots of maintenance. 5.The Civil War destroyed lots of roads.
1830-1900NC Railroad • The name of the region that developed along with the Railroad’s route is the piedmont urban crescent. • The company that owns the North Carolina Railroad today is Norfolk southern corporation. • The places that were supposed to connect in NC railroad is Goldsboro through charlotte. • Today the North Carolina Railroad that stretches is the total of 317 miles.
1830-1900NC Railroad • The Railroad stretched in North Carolina was 223 miles, a long time ago. • It took five years to build and complete the Railroad. • The Railroad opened in 1856 when it was finished. • The Railroad cost 3,000,000 dollars when it was first built and then they moved up the prices.
1900-1945 • In the 1940 airplanes was invented. • The cars help people by getting them to places. • 1920 cars was invented. • The person that made the car wasHenry Fold.
Traveling in 1900-1945 • Over 15,000 towns or cities have Railroad stations. • People traveled in Trains and it cost 5 cents . • People were frustrated driving between alleys . • The people raised the gas to 5 cents. • Now airplanes can carry both passengers and mail.
1900-1945 Ford motor company • The car that made ford famous is the model T • Fordmotor company was made in the city Of charlotte • Henry Ford made the assembly line which made work faster • The great depression shut down ford for years
1900-1945Mother Of Good Roads 1.The roads where rough and hard to ride on and they had thick mud when it rained. 2.Harriet Morehead Berry made the roads not bumpy not hard to ride on. 3.She gave highways to North Carolina. 4.Her nickname was the “Mother Of Good Roads”.
The blue ridge parkway 1900-1945 • The Blue Ridge Is 469 miles • It was made out of sand-clay ,gravel surface and a gradient • It coast 5,000 or 12,000 dollars • It was 1935-1987 it took about 52 years • IT was made because views of the finest mountains in scenery in N.C.
Aviation in North Carolina1900-1945 • The very first airplane was built in 1893. • James Henry Gatling built the first airplane. • The first helicopter was built by William Luther Paul in 1907. • Two famous pilots were women Viole Gentry and Georgia Broadwick.
1900-1945The Wright Brothers IN North Carolina • The Wright Brothers had a bicycle shop in Dayton, Ohio that they ran and created the glider parts at Dayton, Ohio. • They chose Kitty Hawk because of the good and strong there and it had soft sand for landing a glider and some people there would help them when they landed. • The Wright Brothers had to have these three things for the glider to fly. They had to design wings that could keep the airplane in flight. They needed a control system to steer up, down, left, right, and they had to put one wing higher than the other. Finally they needed a light but powerful engine, and propellers to push the craft. • Wilbur Wright was born in Indiana in 1867. He died I 1912 at 45 years old. Orville Wright was born in Dayton, Ohio in 1871. He died in 1948.
First Flight1900-1945 • The first flight was made at 10:35am, on Kill Devil Hill. • Orville was the first Wright brother to fly. • The first flight reached 622ft in 21 seconds. • The Wright brothers researched and studied the pigeons to learn more about how to fly an airplane.
1900-1945 Piedmont Airlines • Piedmont Airlines was started in 1931. • The founder was Richard A. Henson. • The major airline that bought Piedmont Airlines was U.S Airlines. • They had 3 million passengers a year. • Piedmont Airlines is now called American Airlines. (my dad works there)
