  1. Recent studies show that 72% of software development projects either fail or are severely challenged. Many projects fail, not for the lack of money or technology, but for lack of good project management discipline and formal methodologies. One of the major factors for project success is the ability to integrate industry standard software development and project management methodologies into each project. Source: The Standish Group

  2. Industry Standards and Best Practices • What are Industry Standards, and how can they help me with my project? • Project Management Body of Knowledge (PMBOK) • Capability Maturity Model (CMM) • ISO 9000-3 • Industry Best Practices for Software Planning, Development and Maintenance (Methodologies) • How do I turn the theory into something useful on my project?

  3. What does PMBOK provide? • The Project Management Institute’s (PMI) Project Management Body of Knowledge (PMBOK) • PMBOK is an inclusive term that describes the sum of knowledge within the profession of project management. • 9 knowledge areas provide the framework in which project management activities are managed and executed. • Project Management Life Cycle – Initiating, Planning, Executing, Controlling and Closing

  4. What does CMM provide? • The Software Engineering Institute’s (SEI) Capability Maturity Model Integration(CMMI) • 5 level model that guides software organizations in improving their software processes. • Offers guidance on developing and maintaining software in order to gain control of processes and evolve toward a culture of software engineering and management excellence. • CMMI has measurement areas (KPA) each with multiple specific and generic goals – each requiring unique/specific processes to support compliance.

  5. BUT - if these are the “Framework”, where’s the Stucco? • These standards may provide a good framework, but you still need to fill in the gaps with detailed “How-to” process information, reusable documentation, previous project experience and supporting tools.

  6. Using Industry Standards/Best Practices - Trials and Tribulations • Have you ever tried to directly apply these to a project? • While most contain excellent high level guidance, they typically fall short of specific implementation level support. • Many are missing the “How-to” details. • Visual Process fills in the gaps by providing detailed process knowledge, including reusable documentation

  7. Show me how that works! • External Standards domain in Visual Process • Project Management Institute’s PMBOK • Software Engineering Institute’s CMMI

  8. Project Lifecycle

  9. What is Visual Process? • More than just methodologies, it’s a complete environment for managing processes. • Visual Process is a process management solution that helps an organization define and manage IT processes and methodologies, plan projects based on those methodologies, and distribute process knowledge to project teams.

  10. The Visual Process Big Picture

  11. Show me how that works! • What does the knowledge base look like? • Methodologies and their structure (PM Methodology) • Advanced Search capabilities • How is this integrated with Microsoft Project? • Visual Process Planner inside Microsoft Project • Can I build and manage my own processes? • Authoring capability allows for customization

  12. What Visual Process is NOT • While Visual Process integrates with these, it does not provide the core functionality of a • Scheduler • Resource Manager • Project Repository

  13. How does Visual Process support PMBOK/CMM Advancement again? • PMBOK/CMM provide good frameworks • Visual Process fills in the gaps with detailed “How-to” process information, reusable documentation, previous project experience and supporting tools. • PMBOK/CMM prescribe the development of company specific processes in various areas • Visual Process can provide the vehicle to develop, maintain and publish these processes. • Source control for your processes?

  14. Wrap-up • More information • www.asg.com/visualprocess • Free 60-day content subscription • Email: visualprocess@asg.com • White Paper: • “CMM Advancement through Visual Process” • Questions? • Drawing for goodies
