Figure 6. An example of a vetch rye mixture where planting methods combined with a delayed planting date resulted in limited stand with lots of weeds. This cover crop was planted 9/20/08 by broadcasting, with 60lb rye/acre, 30lb vetch/acre . The stand was very patchy with open spaces where weeds predominated, a common problem with broadcast plantings. Picture was taken 5/6/09 shortly before incorporation . Only 10 pounds of nitrogen per acre was fixed by the vetch while nitrogen scavenging by rye was much larger, averaging 57 pounds of nitrogen per acre.
