What is Hoarding • Failing to discard a large amount or number of items that have little to no value • Severe cluttering of person’s home; no longer able to function as a viable living space
Perfectionism • If cannot do it right, will not do it at all • Afraid • May accidentally throw away • Ways of Use • All types of ways to use, or as a gift, therefore keep item • Attachment • Emotional feeling is intense and excessive WHY Do people hoard?

Maslow’s Hierarchy of Needs • Hoarders desire to move up levels • Lack social aspect within their lives • Attempt to make their lives better • As a result, hoard things with “value” • Seems like a solution to their feelings of isolation
Alfred Adler • Individuals need to overcome feelings of inferiority • Strive for superiority and success • Hoarders aim to be “somebody” in a society that judges them as different
Sigmund Freud • SUPEREGO • Aims for perfection • Punishes feelings, actions with guilt • Wants to seek help; realizes it is wrong or different • ID • ‘pleasure principle’ • Demands immediate satisfaction • Wants to continue hoarding; habitual • EGO • Reality principle • Find balance [referee] • Unsure of what action to take; confused • Psychologist comes in

Question 1 • How has society’s views on hoarding changed overtime? Considering that in the earlier years, individuals were seen as “pack rats”, but are now seen as a threat to society? Was it a hidden issue?
Question 2 • How has the media negatively or positively impacted hoarding? Have our minds been altered to believe things said about hoarding?
