Scholastic Standards Policy • Academic Probation • (for 2 semesters, Fall and Spring, not summer) • Academic Dismissal • How do students know they are on probation or dismissed? RAMweb, plus correspondence (written and email) from CASA, the administrative arm of the Faculty Council Committee on Scholastic Standards. Correspondence details probation and dismissal, dismissal appeal, offers resources, support, and describes options after dismissal. How do you assist students?
Options After Dismissal • Academic Dismissal Appeal • Any student may appeal • Students find out about appeals via CASA correspondence/advisors • Appeals can be found on www.casa.colostate.edu front page, for approximately one month prior to due date • Guidelines, FAQ’s and options after dismissal are also online • All appeals will be acted on by the committee 7 days prior to the first day of the next semester, and results are available (confidentially) online • A good appeal includes reasons for poor academic performance, professional documentation or letters of support and a detailed plan of action for improved performance
More Options • Take courses through GUEST, Summer Session, OnLine Plus and earn a CSU cumulative GPA of 2.0 or higher and reapply in a timely manner • Advisors help students decide on the best plan of action, some options are questionable
More Options • Attend another accredited institution, typically a Community College • Meet current CSU Admission transfer standards (15-30 credits at 2.5+ CUM GPA, no D/F) • Reapply (http://admissions.colostate.edu/howtoreturn) • Readmits remain on probation with 2 semesters (and summer) in which to earn a CSU 2.0 CUM GPA. • Transfer credits are not calculated into the CSU GPA
Long-term Option • Fresh Start : Former Colorado State undergraduate students one-time option • After 5 years since CSU Admission (Regularly admitted - not GUEST, Summer only or OnLine Plus) • Fill out a Fresh Start application with advisor at CASA • Complete Intent to Return/Office of Admissions online • Application includes meeting with departmental advisor • Past grades will have demarcation delineating them from new grades, and are not computed into CSU CUM GPA • Grades with C- or better may count toward graduation requirements • Student must complete 30 credits in-residence to graduate under Fresh Start
Other Helpful Policies • Retroactive Withdrawals • A student may request that all grades in an academic period (one or more semesters of continuous enrollment) be retroactively removed and be replaced by entries of “W” on his or her transcript. • For semesters where students encounter exceptional circumstances, physical or mental trauma • Graduate or undergraduate, GUEST or Summer Session • Students speak with CASA advisor, Academic Support Coordinator or Academic Advancement Counselor and submit request online • Request should be well-written, provide professional documentation and/or letters of support and plan of action • The Committee on Scholastic Standards reviews monthly, with the exception of November, June, July and August – CASA is the administrative arm of the committee • Tuition and fees are not affected
Other Helpful Policies • Registration Appeal • A student may request that an individual class or classes be dropped with a refund, withdrawn with a “W,” or grading options changed to S/U or Audit after the appropriate add/drop and withdrawal deadlines • The Registration Appeal Checklist is found on the Registrar’s website under “Registrar’s Forms” and delivered to Registrar’s Office • All appeals require a student letter, instructor letter, documentation, and an unofficial transcript from RAMweb. The Student Option Pass/Fail or Audit Grading form is required for an appeal requesting a change of grading option to Pass/Fail or Audit. NOTE: Appeals concerning a disability require a letter from Resources for Disabled Students (RDS). If the instructor is unavailable to provide an instructor letter, please include documentation which shows that you have requested the letter.
