Extravagant Generosity What God Calls Us to Be! Why God Loves a Hilarious Giver
“Unselfish willingness to give sacrificially in order to make a positive difference for the purposes of Christ” Generosity….
Biology • Theology • Practice
A Theology of Generosity • God is the source of all we have and all that we are – see the Genesis creation story and Psalm 24:1 • God created humans in God’s own image, therefore we are designed to be givers! • Our Response – Rejoice in God’s Generosity!
A Theology of Generosity • Giving is an indispensable part of Christian discipleship. We define our priorities, values, and what we love through our giving. • We cannot worship two masters – must choose between God and financial wealth!!! (Matthew 6:24)
A Theology of Generosity • The Bible offers a minimum standard to measure our response: the tithe (Deut. 26:1-11) • Tithe is a benchmark, • Warren & his peas story… • “Gross vs. Net” question? • The real issue is not whether we will give 10%, but what we will do with the entire 100%!
A Theology of Generosity • Turning to scripture…. • What Value do Scriptures give to “generosity’?
Practices of Generosity What Value is placed on Generosity today? Know your personal story/history Focus on God’s abundant love and generosity Tithe – testify - trust
Generosity Challenge and Invitation Double what you think you can do… trust God to make it possible! Bring the full tithe into the storehouse, so that there may be food in my house, and thus put me to the test, says the Lord of hosts; see if I will not open the windows of heaven for you and pour down for you an overflowing blessing. Malachi 3:9-10
