Do Now: What is the difference between the atomic number and the atomic mass. ( total of 3 sentences, tell me what each is and how they are different from each other.)
The Periodic Table Essential Question: What do elements in the same group have in common?
Objectives • Students will be able to determine what the difference between groups and periods. • Students will be able to determine the trends associated for each.
What is the Periodic Table? • Definition: Table where elements are organized by increasing atomic number (number of protons)
Who was Dmitri Mendeleev? • He devised the first periodic table based in atomic mass. • However some elements were out of order.
Who was Henry G. J. Moseley? • In 1913 Henry arranged elements by atomic numbers and is what we use today.
How is the periodic table arranged? • Periodic Table is arranged by groups and periods.
What is a Group? • Vertical columns of elements with similar properties. • Groups are numbered 1-18. • Elements in the same group have the same number of electrons in their outer energy level. Vertical (up and down)
What is a Period? • Horizontal rows of elements that contain increasing numbers of protons and electrons. • Each row in the periodic table ends when an outer energy level is filled. Horizontal (side to side)
