Questions/answers Interview Questions How to Respond • Tell me a little about yourself. • What are your strengths/ weaknesses? • What problem have you had on your last job and how did you work through it? • What are your goals? • Where do you want to be in 5 years? • Honesty! • Rule of 3 is enough detail • Weaknesses should also include how you overcome them • Thoughtful, not “rehearsed” answers • Relate skills, accomplishments and goals to potential company
Questions/answers Difficult Questions How to Respond • Why are you relocating? • Why did you leave your last job? • Explain your gaps in employment. • If I asked you to move the Rocky Mountains, how would you do it? • If you could be any animal, what would it be? • Do not volunteer personal information • Speak only positively about gaps in employment, relocating and previous jobs and relate skills learned • Some answers reveal how a person thinks through a problem or views him/herself
Questions/answers Illegal Questions How to Respond • Age, race, color, gender, national origin, birthplace, marital/parental/family status, religion or disability • That’s a beautiful ring-are you engaged? • What are your childcare arrangements? • Are you a citizen of the United States? • Answer the intent of the question: I can work 9-5, I am eligible to work in the US. • Politely state you do not understand how the question relates to the job • If interviewer presses with inappropriate questions, you may not want to work for that company
