Aletta Jacobs • Born in 1854: Aletta Henriëtte Jacobs in Groningen. • Her father was a GP. Aletta wanted to be a GP, but in her days only boys were admitted to medical school. • She got permission to be admitted. • On April 20 1871 Aletta got permission from the Prime Minister J.R. Thorbecke to study Medicine at the University of Groningen. Seven years later she graduated.
Society • At that time it was normal in society that women didn’t attend university or have equal rights. • Many people were aginst her study. • She married, but kept her maiden name.
Doctor • Dr. Aletta Jacobs started a GP-office in Amsterdam. • She promoted the use of anti-conception, • Had honest and open conversations with her patients. • She treated poor women free-of-charge twice a week.
She also wrote several books; • About: Women's suffrage, • Women's well being and independence of women, • Legal rights for prostitution and the spreading of sexually transmitted diseases. • She educated working-class women about hygene.
International! • As President of the Dutch Association for Woman's Suffrage (VVK), Aletta was part of an international network. • More and more women united in the International Woman Suffrage Alliance (IWSA). • Between 1906 and 1911 Aletta went to all kinds of countries in the world to promote women's suffrage. • In 1915 she even visited President Wilson of the USA to mediate between countries at war.
She tried to become a member of the Amsterdam council • But was refused. • This case went to court, even to the High Council. • In 1919: in The Netherlands: Women had the right to vote.
