The Molecular Universe Presentation Skills
Imparting knowledge, dispelling ignorance • ‘A beginning, a muddle, and an end.’ • or • Tell them what you are going to tell them • Tell them what you want to tell them • Tell them what you told them
The Essentials • Content – what are you going to present • Design – what way are you going to present it • Delivery – how are you going to present it
Content • What do I want to get over ? • What do they already know ? • Outline your important points • What diagrams/tables do I need ? (but note that Tables are ‘difficult’ in ppt/OHP) • Organise them in a logical order • Separate ‘need-to-know’ from ‘nice-to-know’
Design • What is the purpose of the presentation ? • Who will I be talking to ? • How much time do I have ? • Introduction and summary/conclusions are extremely important (remember the ‘muddle’)
Design • Don’t clutter slide – 8 lines of text 8 words per line • Be careful about colour contrasts (or lackofthem) • Ensure figures are legible • Text informs the audience and stimulates you
UV radiative transfer Radial UV field Geometrical dilution Optical depth IS UV field Scattered light
Delivery • Can you find out information on room ? • Make sure projector, screen, microphone, pointer are working • Place the microphone in the right place • Say what you want to say about each slide • Don’t digress !! • Speak clearly
Delivery • Be authoritive – you are the expert • Face audience as much as possible • Make eye contact • Don’t stand in the projector beam • Allow as many people as possible to see the presentation for as long as possible – stand to the side or move about
Delivery • Relax • Don’t overstay your welcome – keep to time • Enjoy the experience .. But be prepared for the questions !
