Long Hill School’s Project ExcEL Team • To date: • 44 English Learners • 15 languages represented • Currently in year three of the grant • Operating as a school committee that meets approximately twice per month • Representatives from every grade level, one special education teacher, one TESOL teacher, and one administrator
The High-Leverage Language Features • Sophistication of Topic Vocabulary • Sophistication of Verb Forms • Expansion of Word Groups • Sophistication of Sentence Structure • Stamina • Coherence/Cohesion • Establishment of Advanced Relationships Between Ideas
Development of Sentence and Paragraph Frame Kit • Grade level partners on the ExcEL team worked together to create sentence starters, sentence frames, and paragraph frames for each writing unit • Narrative writing • Opinion writing • Informational writing • Writing about reading • TESOL teacher and Special Education teacher created sentence starters and sentence frames for writing about math that could be used across the grade levels Sentence Starters, Sentence Frames and Paragraph Frames
The Project Keeps Growing... • Opinion Writing Unit • Adding scaffolds and supports by proficiency level for each grade • Referencing CELP standards as a guide by proficiency level
Goals for 2019-2020 • Roll out scaffolded opinion writing unit to school staff • Grade level ExcEL team members will present to their grade levels with the support of the TESOL teacher • Develop and scaffold other writing units by proficiency level
