Living in Amsterdam Presentation WOUW-Amsterdam Madelien, Maria, Hanne, Hermien, Binky, Marjan September 16, 2016, Helsinki, Sacioni
How do the elderly live in Amsterdam? • Policies on behalf of the City of Amsterdam • Senior Housing • The housing situation is problematic in Amsterdam, not only because of the housing shortage, but mainly because of all the rules from the municipality. Eg. income requirements for living areas • And these rules change once annually. Eg. the admission policy for living areas What has changed? • Many senior homes are being closed • Older people (must) remain longer living at home • Lack of elderly care due to shortages in subsidies make it more expensive • Social isolation levels increase
Lifespan-Resistant Housing What does that mean? New housing and construction must meet the following requirements: • All flooring level, ground floor or elevator; • Wide doors, • No thresholds, • High-rise toilet • Within walking distance to shops, healthcare institutions and public transport In existing buildings these requirements must be accommodated as much as possible, often through subsidies, eg. adding a stairlift
Housing needs of women The work principles of the theme group Housing of WOUW • First her wishes inventoried: only with women, or mixed (eg. wish men, ages), or alone with peers • Renovation of the house • Rent and / or purchase • Common room • Facilities in the neighberhood For these wishes the municipality, housing corportions and existing living groups have been contacted . A residential area with 88 houses has now been found, named Akropolis
Housing Groups, a solution? Are housing groups a solution to problems the elderly encounter? Other possibilities: • Town-HousingVillage • Area Chamber • Buddy • Paid readings, hiking excursions, museums, food • Letting students live free in exchange for homecare
