Richard the Lionhearted

2. Early Life Richard the Lionhearted was born in England in 1157. His father was King Henry II, his mother was Eleanor of Aquitaine. He was also called Richard Coeur De Lion. Richard was the third son. He was considered a hero in his time. His parents got separated and he had to stay with Eleanor.

3. Becoming King Richard the Lionhearted became king of England when he was thirty-two. In his ten years of being king he was at the castle for about two months. It appears that Richard didn’t like being King. It’s doubtful he knew the English language.

5. Captured When Richard was 32, he became King of England. The Crusades were fought in the Holy Land at that time, and Richard joined Philip Augustus of France on a crusade. He planned to retake Jerusalem from the Muslims. They failed. During the battle, Richard angered the Duke of Austria. When Richard journeyed he was captured by the Duke of Austria in the Adriatic and eventually captured by the Duke of Austria. A heavy ransom was demanded for his release. Kings apparently don’t come cheap, and it took a quarter of every man’s income for a whole year to raise funds for Richard’s release. He eventually returned to England in 1194. Richard got released because of a deal.

6. Hobbies and Games In the medieval times they did not have any sort of electronics. They had to find there own way of playing games. They either could play board games or go outside and do something like jousting, sports, hunting, and hawking. Here are some of the board games they played. Chess Tables-Backgammon Nine Men’s Morris Alqerques-A classic period strategy game Fox and Geese- A game of strategy Shovel board- Ancestor of shuffleboard Knucklebones- early game of dice
