Stem Cell Research The Cultural Controversy Presented by: Catherine Durland Curtis Bowery
Stem Cells • What are they? • Stem cells are a type of base cell that has the ability to manifest itself into adult tissue • Two types being Embryonic and Adult cells • Why are they important? • They have potential to cure millions of humans who are victims of diseases and other injuries
Techniques • Altered Nuclear Transfer • DNA from adult to egg and creating embryo • Therapeutic Cloning • Removal of nucleus from egg and replaced with adult cell nucleus • IPS Cells • Takes genes from tissue cell and inserts into induced pluripotent stem sells from skin • Nucleofection • DNA inserted through holes in cell layer through electrical pulses
Con Research • Ethical Reasons • Life beginning at conception • Political • Federal government allocating taxpayer dollars
Alternatives and Compromising • Stem cells can be taken from any part of the body
Take a Side • Does life begin at conception, in the womb, or at birth? • Is the embryo equivalent to human child? • Does the destruction of one embryo justify curing a great number of patients?
