Background-Basic facts • Burkina Faso is a West African country; • Total area=274,200 km2 ; • Population (2009)=15.74 million, Population growth rate= 3%; • GDP (2008): 7.28 Billion US$, • GDP Per capita (2008): 480 US$; • Agriculture represents 33% of its GDP and occupies 85% of the working population; • Self-sufficiency ratio of rice is 30%; • Import value of rice (2007): 60 Million US$.
Background-Related Policies • In 2004, BF worked out its RDS in accordance with the CSLP one of whose strategic main lines is to increase, diversify and intensify the agricultural productions; • Rice growing is one of the priority fields to achieve food security in BF; • Since 2007, BF has been granting subsidies to the rice producers on their inputs and support for capacity building of rice producers organisation; • PNIA/PROSDRSP in finalisation stage defined the objectives of CAADP in BF regardingricegrowing as a foodsécurity and earningsector ;
Priority agro-ecologies • 3 rice growing ways are carried in BF: Irrigated, low land and rain fed; • The 3 rice growing ways have priority for production growth;
Priority sub-sector Achieving the 4 main lines of the NSRD involves the priority will be granted to: • Increase of the exploited areas and a better management of water resources; • Promotion and improvement of the use of the improved seeds, fertilizers and pesticides; • Mechanization of rice growing (from ploughing to post harvest); • Improvement of the quality of local rice by adequate equipments for post harvest treatments ; • Promotion of the access of local rice to the national and sub-regional market; • Promotion of the access of the actors to the credits; • Reinforcement of the operational capacities of the actors of rice sector; • Research and dissemination of innovating technologies of rice production;
