  1. Alban City School Welcome to Year 6

  2. Year 6 Literacy

  3. Reading • Guided reading and individual reading continues to take place in Year 6. Re-reading will be an essential aspect to develop overall understanding. • Pupils will be given a book extract to work through. They will explore language choices, layout devices and author’s intent. • Reading skills: retrieval, inference, deducing and summarising. The children will also learn about developing their ideas furthers with supporting evidence from the text.

  4. Handwriting • Pupils will be expected to join across the curriculum. • Handwriting pens are available in all lessons to support handwriting.

  5. Editing work Children will spend time editing their own and others work. They will use our marking scheme to do this(Tickled pink and green for growth). A real focus will be placed on spelling and the correct use of punctuation by re-reading before up-levelling. Next step comments are provided to extend the children’s learning or address misconceptions. These are checked by the teacher and followed up if errors are still present.

  7. Addition and Subtraction Compact methods for calculation will be used which the children will already be familiar with. Examples:

  9. Division Short division will be the preferred method in Year 6 to consolidate efficient working out. The children will also consolidate their understanding of formal long division for when dividing by a two digit number.

  10. Other areas of Arithmetic: • Fractions including mixed numbers (adding, subtracting, multiplying and dividing) • Place value – values of each digit • Broader Maths curriculum • Shape and space • Measure • Statistics • Algebra

Science • Animals including humans – particular focus on the individual components of the circulatory system • Light – how we see, reflection and refraction • Electricity – correcting circuits and renewable sources of energy • Evolution and Inheritance – adaptation, extinction, characteristics of animals, human evolution, DNA

Homework • Children will be provided with weekly homework: • Maths • Grammar • Spelling • Children will be provided with fortnightly homework: • Reading comprehension • An additional piece of homework will be set in relation to the wider curriculum. A specific time frame will be given for each piece of work.

  15. P.E. P.E. lessons will take place both indoors and outdoors. All lessons will be taught by Mr. Roberts. Pupils will need tracksuit trousers to wear during colder weather, and trainers rather than plimsolls. Monday Friday

  16. SATs • Take place during May • Maths • 1 x Arithmetic Test (30 minutes) • 2 x Reasoning Tests (40 minutes each) Marks from all 3 papers are added together to form one final score.

  17. SATs • Take place during May • English • SPAG • 1 x Spelling Test (time as required) • 1 x Grammar and Punctuation Test (45 minutes) • Reading • 1 x Reading Test (1 hour) Marks from both papers are added together to form one final score.

  18. SATs • Writing • Assessed by teachers (could be externally moderated) • Objectives can be found in the back of Literacy books • Science • Small number of schools selected to take part. Sample is thought to be representative of the whole population. • Schools selected will administer the tests during a two-week period starting on Monday 8th June. • There are 3 papers each taking 25 minutes.

How can I check on my child’s progress? • Please feel free to ask any questions during soft • Parents’ Evening – first ones will be in October • School Report – given out at the end of the academic year • How can I help at home? • Blog – Learn about what we have been doing in class during the last week as well as upcoming events • Curriculum workshops – Will be run by teachers. Date TBC. • Soft start activities – Reinforcing taught skills or completing work • Spelling and grammar – Check over any written work completed at home
