Best Practices for Horizontal Well Injection: Experience, Modeling, and Analytical Techniques

This joint industry project aims to pull together operator experience and modeling work to create operational and modeling best practices for horizontal well injection. It also includes the development of a multifrac injectivity correlation tool and guidelines for analytical calculations of horizontal well injectivity. The project's plan includes peer review and incorporation of the developed tools and practices into the PWRI Toolbox.

  1. Produced Water Reinjection PerformanceJoint Industry Project TerraTek, Inc. Triangle Engineering Taurus Reservoir Solutions (DE&S) E-first Technologies Advantek International

  2. Task 6 – Horizontal wells Review of progress since Dec 2000 meeting in Houston

  3. Task 6 – Horizontal wells: Summary of decisions from December 2000 meeting • Pull together the experience from operators and modeling work done in the project to create • Operational best practices • Modeling best practices • Interest in the multifractured well injectivity correlation (Kuppe) for the Toolbox • Wrap up Task 6

  4. New Work completed • Additions and revisions to the presentations at the Dec 2000 meeting: • “Analysis of Horizontal Well Injectivity - Example” • “Horizontal wells: Injectivity analysis – survey of tools and methods” • Best Practices for modeling Horizontal Wells – first draft completed • Work on the spreadsheet tool for multifractured wells in progress

  5. Best Practices - Modeling • 4 main categories • Thermal effects on stresses • Thermal effects on PVT • Gridding issues • Fracture coupling • Examples of the magnitude of various effects • Examples drawn primarily from the Prudhoe Bay simulation work • Bibliography still incomplete

  6. II prediction for multiply fractured well

  7. Method - assumptions • Single phase, Darcy flow • Fully penetrating, infinite conductivity vertical fractures • Finite (closed) drainage area • II computed after Pseudo-steady state flow is reached • 1, 3, 5 and 7 fractures in a symmetric pattern

  8. Method – correlation form • The injectivity index with fractures, IIf , is calculated from the corresponding index for unfractured well IInf as: IIf = Q/ P = [(0.001127(2kH)(2Xfh) C)/ B x) + IInf ] D where C and D are complex coefficients:

  9. Method – correlation form C = a0 + a1 kH + a2 kH2 + a3 kH3 D =  +  Xfd +  Xfd2 +  Xfd3   where Xfd = Xf /(Ly /2) and coefficients depend on frac configuration

  10. Plan for completion of Task 6 • Operational best practices for horizontal wells • in cooperation with other contractors • Mainly extract operator’s experience • Peer review of Modeling best practices document • Incorporate the multifrac II tool in the PWRI Toolbox • Write “Best Practices” for horiz well injectivity calc using analytical techniques (to complement modeling) ?
