Miss Geyer’s Table Talk At-Home Activities for You and Your Second Grader
What is Table Talk? • While sharing family dinner, use these daily prompts to help initiate an educational conversation between you and your child. Each activity focuses on a different subject and each day's prompt will be the focus of alesson from our classroom.
Why Is This So Important? • The curriculum will be taught in the classroom, that is something that I can confirm to you. But working these concepts into the home will be endlessly rewarding to you and your child. By helping me work on these ideas at home, the educational benefits of your child will certainly show.
Topic 1: Science • Activity- Discuss what foods are hot/cold being served and the differences of the consistency of those foods. • Standard- 3.2.2.A3: Demonstrate how heating and cooling may cause changes in the properties of materials.
Topic 2: Math • Activity- Count how many types of food is on each plate. Then spell the number and show it with one's fingers. • Standard- 2.3.2.A: Demonstrate that a single object has different attributes that can be measured in multiple ways.
Topic 3: Social Studies • Activity- Discuss your culture and what traditions you have because of that culture. (i.e. food, holidays, sons, etc.) • Standard- 8.4.2.C: Identify how cultures have commemorations and remembrances.
Topic 4: Health • Activity- Ask what the best part of the day was and what is something new learned. Sharing ideas with one another promotes good communication and healthy behaviors. • Standard- Standard 5: Students will demonstrate the ability to use decision-making skills to enhance health.
Topic 5: Language Arts • Activity- Ask your child for a synonym and antonym of: little, true, old and girl. • Standard- 1.1.2.C: Use meaning and knowledge of words (e.g., synonyms, antonyms) across content areas to develop a speaking and reading vocabulary.
Topic 6: Reading • Activity- Practice spelling and putting these words in a sentence: our, fold, action, and country. These words are from our weekly spelling list. • Standard- CC.1.4.2.F: Demonstrate a grade appropriate command of the conventions of standard English grammar and spelling.
